Grading
I
will be using points to determine grades that you will be earning.
I will enter the points that you earned on a specific assignment
in my grade program and usually assign the corresponding percentage
and grade on your assignment/quiz etc. At the end of the grading
period, the points will be totaled and averaged and then the final
grade will be assessed based on the percentages below. You are
encouraged to keep track of the points that you earn so that you
can figure out your own grade at any point in the trimester. I
only give out grades at the end of a grading period. You can always
access your grade online through the CDH website. Please contact
me as early as possible if you notice any discrepancies in grades/scores.

I
will also occasionally use grading rubrics for written and speaking
projects. We will review them together before
the project is due so that you know what you need to do in order
to get the desired grade.
Homework
Homework
must be completed before class begins-class
begins when the bell rings at the beginning of the hour. If you
do not have your assignment completed at this time, I will not
accept it and you will not receive the points for the assignment.
I do not accept or give partial credit or points for late assignments.
I usually give some class time to start homework-take advantage
of this time that I give!!
Sometimes,
we check homework in class. The points that you receive on your
homework do not reflect the number you got correct but rather
that you attempted to complete your homework. I think it is very
important to learn from your mistakes. Homework is a chance to
make mistakes, without penalty, before the test. And, even if
you understood what went on in class that day, homework is your
opportunity to move from being just informed to being well informed
by practicing what you have learned that day in another environment-at
home. We will check homework in a wide variety of ways in this
class. This includes having others check your work, turning assignments
in for me to check, checking your own work from an overhead and
also putting work on the board for the entire class to check and
learn from.
Positive
participation will have a positive impact on your grade. Negative
participation or distracting other student’s learning will result
in taking away positive participation points or other penalties.
I try very hard to keep a positive attitude in class and make
it a positive learning environment. You will receive a participation
grade approximately every two weeks. It will be an average of
all of the grading opportunities that you have during the two-week
period. I will be using the guide* below to evaluate your communication
practice…
1.
Are you participating by listening and responding appropriately
to your partner?
2.
Are you trying to stay in Spanish as much as possible?
3.
Are you following instructions?
4.
Is the content of the message consistent with the context? (If
you are supposed to be asking questions about cars, are the questions
about cars and not about food or sports?)
5.
Would a sympathetic native speaker understand the message in
spite of grammar or pronunciation errors?

There
will also be limited opportunities for earning extra-credit. Please
do not depend on extra-credit as a last minute fix for a poor
grade.
Attendance
The
CDH world language department places great emphasis on regular
attendance because it is absolutely necessary for satisfactory
progress in school. In class participation is your only auditory
exposure to the Spanish language. For this reason, it is very
important for you to attend class. However, if it is necessary
for you to miss class, there are some important policies that
you need to be aware of. If you know you will be gone on a specific
day-talk to me ahead of time to find out if there is anything
you should have prepared for the next class meeting.
•If
I tell you to get notes that you missed when you were gone, get
them from another student after class-not during class. Be sure
you ask a person that you “trust” and can read their writing.
•I
think it is important to arrive to class on time. If you accumulate
three tardies , you will earn an hour of detention.
•Tests
or quizzes that were missed need to be made up the next day that
you return to school if you missed one day. I do make it a practice
to tell you about a test a few days before hand. You must
still take the test or quiz even if you missed the review.
•Tests
or quizzes that are missed must be made up with me-either before
or after school or during one of my free periods. I will
not leave the test in the library or with one of
your study hall teachers.
•You
can find the assignment that you missed in the appropriate book
that is located in the front of the classroom or online at the
Quia site in the calendar section-these will be updated daily.
It is your responsibility to get your
make-up work and show it to me the next day. If this is not done,
you will not get credit.
•If
you are having a problem doing an assignment or making up work
in the designated time, please talk to me and let me know. I can
make special arrangements at my discretion. The only thing that
I ask is that you talk to me before the work
is due not the day that it is due.
Cheating
Policy( As found in student handbook/planner)
In
this class you will neither give nor receive unauthorized aid
without specific permission for collaboration or without proper
citation. This includes class work, quizzes, examinations, preparations
of reports or projects, or in any other work that is used to evaluate
you. You can expect that any papers or projects you
turn in will be checked to assure originality and accuracy of
citations. At Cretin- Derham Hall we uniformly deplore cheating,
lying, fraud, misrepresentation, plagiarism, copying other students’
work, and other dishonest behaviors that jeopardize the rights,
welfare and integrity of Cretin- Derham Hall.
Consequences
First
Documented Offense: Zero credit for work; Teacher will call parents
and the Dean of Students will be notified. The Dean of Students
will be responsible for assigning additional consequences.
Second
Documented Offense: Academic Board of Discipline will recommend
consequences, which may include loss of credit for the class or
a recommendation for a Board of Review.
These
consequences are not limited to cheating in one class; they are
cumulative.
*****
•I
want all of us to have fun in this class. I am going to enjoy
working with each and every one of you. I think I have some good
information to share with you and I know that you all have things
to teach me as well. If, at any time, you want to discuss things
that I am doing or not doing in class, I want you to know that
my door is always open. Flexibility is a quality I think everyone
should have. Also, remember that your attitudes and actions in
my class dictate the activities that we are able to participate
in.
•Finally,
if you start to get confused on a subject that we are discussing
in class, come in and get help as soon as you can. We build on
existing concepts each day, so, it is very important that you
understand the basics so that you can continually build on them.
I cannot stress enough-come in and get some help. I will stay
after school as long as you like so that you can understand-or
I will get here extra early in the morning to explain what we
did the day before if you were confused in class. Remember that
the only stupid thing about a question is if it were not asked.
I can never be too busy-but you have to ask.
