This
course is an in-depth study of functions: polynomial, exponential,
logarithmic, and trigonometric. It also includes a study of complex
numbers, analytical geometry, sequences, series, probability,
and statistics. In their past study of mathematics, students have
been exposed to many of the concepts presented in this course.
The goal of Analysis is to deepen their understanding of these
concepts by a graphical, symbolic, and numerical approach. This
course is a preparatory class for students who wish to take calculus
next year. We use the textbook Advanced Mathematics
by Richard Brown.
Students
study many of the following topics:
Trimester
One: Functions: linear, quadratic,
polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic; Solving and graphing
functions; Solving and graphing inequalities.
Trimester
Two: Analytic geometry; Trigonometric
functions and identities; Applications of trigonometry.
Trimester
Three: Polar coordinates and
complex numbers; Sequences and series; Probability; Statistics;
Limits; Introduction to Calculus.

Mathematics is sequential in nature so it is important that students
attend class daily. Many important concepts are discussed and
skills are practiced during each class session. Students are required
to read the textbook as part of their homework assignment. Reading
mathematics is not easy but it is a very important skill to acquire
before students enter college.

Students are required to have a graphing calculator. This technology
enhances a student’s ability to visualize functions and allows
them to explore mathematics at a deeper level. If students are
unable to obtain a graphing calculator, the math department has
a small number of graphing calculators available for student use
in the classroom.

In general, students have a homework assignment every day.
A copy of the current assignment sheet is available on the web
site on the Materials page.
It is critical to stay current with assignments and to get help
when questions arise.

Math help is available before, during, and after school. A math
instructor is available to answer questions in Study Hall and
during AT. I am here from 7:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. on most days.

Grades are determined by achievement in three areas: test scores
account for 50%, quiz and homework scores are 40%, and the final
exam is 10% of a student’s grade. Grades can be checked
online and are updated weekly.
90–100% is an A, 80–89% is a B, 70–79% is a C, and 60–69%
is a D
