John T. Cooney ’39 was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota in June, 2007. The award is conferred on an alumna or alumnus who has attained unusual distinction in his/her profession or in public service and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership. Cooney founded the largest outplacement and employee search firm in Florida, Jack Cooney and Associates, which he ran until his retirement in 1990.
Robert Treanor ’39 writes, “When I left the Army in 1948, contributions from the Cretin Class of 1939 were on the last page (of the annual report of donors). This year, we’ve made it to page one! Sort of like finishing a marathon.”
Dorothy Casper, widow of Bob Casper ’40 (pictured at left) writes, “With 23 grandchildren, 9 great-granchildren and our five children, we have had a continuing line up of Cretin and CDH graduations with the end not in sight yet! We think CDH is the best!” Bob, who died in 2000, was inducted in 2007 into the Minnesota Hospitality Hall of Fame by the Minnesota Restaurant Association. Bob owned and operated the Cherokee Sirloin Room in West St. Paul, MN.
Congratulations to Louie Tinucci ’46 (pictured at left) who, in 2007, was also inducted into the Minnesota Hospitality Hall of Fame by the Minnesota Restaurant Association . Louie, who is celebrating 60 years in the restaurant business, founded Tinucci’s Restaurant in Newport, MN, 50 years ago.
Virginia Binet Berg ’50 has been selected to serve a four-year term as one of 14 lay women on the 60-member National Advisory Council of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Berg is a Title I Private School Specialist with the U.S. Department of Education. She and her husband of 50 years, John, live in Fairfax, VA, and have four sons and seven grandchildren.

For 38 years Maynard Oster ’52 has been handling the announcing and scoring duties for girls and boys hockey at the Wakota Arena in South St. Paul.
Jim Olsen ’54 of Dayton, OH, is still teaching at Wright State and is the president of Olsen Engineering Consulting. He enjoys riding the bike trails of Ohio. “I don’t want to look back; someone might be following me,” he jokes. Jim is trying, with little success he says, to organize a St. Mark’s Grade School reunion for the Class of 1950.

January 10, 2008, was declared William J. Cosgriff Day in St. Paul by proclamation of Mayor Chris Coleman ’79. Cosgriff ‘59 was recognized for his 30+ years of volunteer service to numerous organizations throughout the city.
Sue Barcelow Bury ’60, a retired photographer, lives in Hilton Head, SC, and enjoys walks on the beach, playing bridge, golfing and reading. She has four grandchildren.
Mary Kraft, CSJ, ‘60 and Rita Quigley ’60 are joining with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and Consociates on a pilgrimage to the roots of the CSJ order in Lyon, France, in May, 2008.
Karleen Selander Reller ’60 is a part time registered nurse and supervisor at Bethany Convent on the campus of the College of St. Catherine.
Billy Drake ’60 writes, “I noticed that Rich Nygaard and Jim Schwebel have joined forces at Jim’s law firm. Congrats to both! I remember as a young boy staying overnight at the Schwebel’s house and seeing Jim and (his brother) John get up at 3:30 a.m. to deliver newspapers in 32 degree weather. They asked me to go along, but I politely declined!”
Thomas R. Thibodeau ’60 has been selected by Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of personal injury litigation. Best Lawyers has been described by American Lawyer as “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”
Mary Archer Mitch ’62 was honored with the Nurses of Vision and Action (NOVA) Award from the University of Minnesota, Fairview. Mitch has worked for Fairview for 45 years, the past 25 years with chemically dependent patients.
Ronald Hofmeister ’64 was re-elected chairman of the board of trustees of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, the nation’s largest private pharmacy school. “Retirement continues to be extremely enjoyable!”
Pat Curley White ’64, a resident of Sun City, AZ, is warning the residents of Arizona and all visitors to the region about the dangers of Valley Fever. John Parsons ’70 and his wife, Jane, reside in the Bitteroot Valley of western Montana where the hiking and hunting opportunities abound and the scenery is spectacular. John earned his undergraduate degree in social work and an MS in education, which led to a rewarding career in employee assistance. The couple has six children, including one who is attending the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN.
Bill Buron ’72 and his wife, Maureen, have three sons—Brian ’01, Jim ’02 and Steve ’04—all of whom work for Joe Gallagher ’82 at FILO Productions, an event production company in St. Paul, MN.

Diane and Bob Stupka ‘73 wish to thank the members of the Class of 2002 for remembering their son, Rob ‘02, at their 5-year reunion and for making a donation to the Rob Stupka ’02 Memorial Fund at CDH. Rob was killed in an accident in November, 2005.
Irene O’Neill, CSJ ’74 was named the 2008 “Distinguished Irish Woman” by the St. Patrick’s Day Association. Irene is the Executive Director of the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries Foundation.

Jeanne Rossini Weir ’76 is the Pharmacy Residency Program Director at Banner Health in Phoenix, AZ. As a clinical pharmacist she is working in research of medications affecting Alzheimer’s disease.
Patti Wilson Gaffney ‘77 loved having Pat ’75 and Kathy Failes Carpenter ’77 fly from the Pacific Northwest to the great state of Texas to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2007.
In 2007, Mancini’s Char House and Lounge was awarded the very first Restaurant of the Year award by the Minnesota Restaurant Association. Mancini’s was opened in 1948 by Nick Mancini, a faithful CDH supporter, who died in 2007. The restaurant is now under the management of Nick’s sons, Pat Mancini ’78 and John Mancini ‘83.
Donna Dingle ‘80, her husband, Kristofer Sween, and their three children extend their best wishes to old friends from Derham Hall and Cretin. The family lives in St. Paul, MN.
Congratulations to Michael Connolly Filbin ’81 and his wife, Deborah, on the birth of their second child, Liam, in January, 2008. Liam joins big sister, Veronica, born in 2006. Michael is in his 12th year with the Chicago Police Department.
Donald Vidal ’81 of Grand Rapids, MN, teaches music at Northern Lights Community School and performs with Sam Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club. He reports that the group’s latest CD got a great review in the January, 2008, issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine.

Patricia Jurewicz ’85 is the associate director of As You Sow, an organization in San Francisco, CA, dedicated to ensuring that corporations and other institutions act responsibly and in the long-term best interests of the environment and human condition. “We use shareholder engagement to promote corporate social responsibility,” she writes. She is also enjoying all that the Bay Area has to offer.
Rita Rosenberger ’85 (left) writes, “Our family is now complete! Ernest John Barthel was born in Duluth on August 29, 2007, weighing in at 7 pounds, 9.5 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long. He is welcomed and adored by big sister, Agnes Margaret. Less sleep, more dreams….” The family lives in Duluth, MN.

Joel Chiodi ’89 left the Game Show Network (GSN) to become the vice president of marketing and promotions for the NFL Network. Chiodi, who spent seven years at GSN, will manage the pro football network’s consumer and affiliate marketing, along with local ad sales. Chiodi lives in Los Angeles, CA.
Andrew Sexton ’90 lives in Waterloo, IA, with his wife, Christine, and two daughters: Zoe and Hazel.
Nick Snyder ’90 and his wife, Cindy, live in Los Angeles, CA, with their son, Kagan Laszlo, 2, and their dog, Sabrina. Nick is a journeyman plumber and handles project management for a commercial plumbing company.

In November, 2007, Andrew Urbanski ’93 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy. He recently completed a sea tour as the navigator on board the USS Louisiana, a ballistic missile submarine in Bangor, WA. Currently, he is serving as the Squadron Operations officer in Bangor. Andrew and his wife, Nicole, live in Port Orchard, WA, and are celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary.
Congratulations to Matt Birk ’94 who was named “Vikings Community Man of the Year” for the 6th consecutive year. In addition to his own HIKE Foundation, which has raised nearly a half million dollars since 2002 for education and interactive programming, Birk is also the Vikings’ spokesperson for the United Way and has made countless visits to area schools and hospitals.
Stacy Lemke Nugent ‘94 and her husband, Jason, welcomed their beautiful baby daughter, Paige Margaret, on February 5, 2008.
Renee Adrian ’96, daughter of Dennis ’67 and Margaret Adrian, is a Minnesota state trooper and was among the very first responders to the I-35W Bridge collapse site in August, 2007. In March, 2008, she was nearly killed on Interstate 94 when a motorist behind the wheel of an SUV fell asleep and plowed 60 miles per hour into the rear end of her squad car as she sat in the front seat. The squad’s seatbelt, cage and roll bar likely saved her life.
Lance Corporal Ben Campbell ’96 is a marine with the 2nd Tank Battalion stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC. He was deployed in March, 2008, to Afghanistan and is temporarily serving with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Beth Thieman Wright ’96 and her husband, Adam, welcomed their first child, Hailey Elizabeth, on August 19, 2007. The couple works at Securian Financial Group in downtown St. Paul and lives in Rosemount, MN.

Jenna Madden ’03 was selected to give the student address at the College of St. Catherine’s December, 2007, commencement ceremony. She was awarded her BA in elementary education from St. Kate’s at the ceremony.
