Cretin-Derham Hall Beginning Band Syllabus Goal: Beginning Band is a class designed for introductory level band student at the high school level. The primary goal of Beginning Band is to prepare you for eventual placement and participation in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble. The instructor determines the timing of entering Concert Band or Wind Ensemble, based on how your musicianship skills progress through the school year.
Grading: Grades will be determined primarily on progress of skills on your instrument. Other factors on grading will include daily participation (practice and preparation for lessons), concert reports, Smart Music activities and recordings and occasional quizzes. You may be asked to participate with the concert band at a performance. You teacher will determine this and inform you well in advance. Please check the date of the concert selected and make sure you have nothing scheduled that might conflict at that time.
Daily work: Beginning Band works like a private lesson as an independent study. There will be a lesson with a teacher one day and a day of practice on the alternating day. Lessons can cover a variety of things including: scales, arpeggios, tone production, tonguing, vocabulary, rhythm, reading music and other related topics. Progress for each week is expected on your instrument. While a practice day is provided for you, it is expected that you will also practice at home on the appropriate materials for the next class session. The teacher will determine the best use of the student’s time as progress is made on your instrument. Make a plan for bringing your instrument home almost everyday.
Concert participation: Depending on progress assessed from the instructor, you may even participate with the concert band on a few songs at the next concert.
Concert Attendance: There are no beginning band concerts; however attendance at Cretin-Derham Hall Band concerts is mandatory. Remember that your goal in Beginning Band is to eventually be a part of the Concert Band or Wind Ensemble and what a better way to see what our music program is all about by seeing and listening to what it is all about. Please check in with the instructor before performances begin.
Attend one band concert per trimester.
