Science ElectivesAs part of our on going commitment to provide our students with a wide variety of science courses, we offer several science electives on a single credit basis. The elective descriptions below give a general overview of the course along with the trimester that it is offered. The course registration number is also included in the title. ASTRONOMY: SOLAR SYSTEM AND THE VAGABONDS Tri I - 85672T1This is a one trimester course. Students may take one, two or all three of these astronomy courses. The solar
system includes studying the planets and moons as well as the vagabond asteroids and comets. This course is
available for advanced credit. See Ms. Aumann in Room 240 or the science office if you have any questions.

ASTRONOMY: STARS AND CONSTELLATIONS Tri II - 85671T2 This is a one trimester course. Students may take one, two or all three of these astronomy courses. In this course
we will study the constellations and their mythology, the Sun, the life-cycle of stars, and electromagnetic radia-
tion. This course is also available for advanced credit. See Ms. Aumann in Room 240 or the science office if you
have questions.

ASTRONOMY: DEEP SPACE AND BEYOND Tri III - 85673T3This is a one trimester course. Students may take one, two or all three of these astronomy courses. This course
will study the Milky Way and other galaxies, quasars, energy sources, cosmology, space-time, the Big Bang, black
holes, and the search for extraterrestrials. This course is available for advanced credit. See Ms. Aumann in Room
240 or the science ofice if you have any questions.

BIOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES - College Prep or Advanced Tri II - 85662T2This is primarily a lab course. Students learn sterile technique, plant tissue culture, DNA extration, colony trans-
formation, culturing and staining of bacteria as well as oral and airborne bacteria, bacteria in foods, antibiotics
and bactericides and the development of resistant strains. Advanced credit is available to students who complete an additional project. This advanced option must be declared officially by the tenth day of trimester 2 and the option may not be changed after this deadline.

EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE Tri I – 85659T1This one trimester course focuses on geologic and atmospheric topics. Topics include: Plate Tectonic theory, the
rock cycle, global climate and predicting weather. The course will also include a social justice piece applying the
science to personal choices as it impacts the earth and atmosphere.

ZOOLOGY - Advanced or Honors Tri III - 84743T3Components of this course include: characteristics, classification, life cycles, adaptations, evolution and natural
history of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. This course includes student presentations, reports and
dissection. Honors credit available with project and instructor’s permission. Honors credit is available to students who complete an additional project. This honors option must be declared officially by the tenth day of trimester 3 and the option may not be changed after this deadline.
