Physical Science Department

This course is offered at the college prep level and also at advanced and honor levels. The levels differ in mathematical depth and the rate at which material will be covered. At each level, students will be encouraged to build skills, which will provide a foundation for understanding how science and technology affect everyday life and will be readied to continue their study of the sciences.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE Year long – 81520T1

The physical science program focuses on lab skills: use of lab equipment, obtaining data in the lab, organizing
tables, graphs, histograms, an understanding of error and uncertainty in measurement, the powers and limita-
tions of models in science and the relationship between problem solving and physical situations. Content will
come from the areas of chemistry and physics and an understanding and appreciation of the physical world will
be cultivated.
Grades 9

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - Advanced Year long – 81540T1
Students will be expected to set up mathematical relationships from data obtained in lab and discuss how
various types of experimental errors will affect the calculated results. Principles of Chemistry will be covered
two-thirds of the year and Principles of Physics the other one-third. Students are expected to be able to read for
content and comprehension. The students will be expected to develop a high level of independence in setting
up data and coming to conclusions using outside projects and reports.
Grades 9

PHYSICAL SCIENCE – Honors Year long – 81550T1
This course is designed for college bound/science oriented students and will include detailed lab work, class dis-
cussion, outside reading and projects. This course will move at a vigorous pace and focus on Newtonian/Classi-
cal Mechanics (first half of the year) and Principles of Chemistry (second half of the year). Students are expected
to have a high aptitude in mathematics.
