Welcome to the CDH Science Department Homepage

The Science Department of Cretin-Derham Hall is home to a dedicated group of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. Our department history is rich, reflective of the time and place in which it has grown and the people who brought it to life. We are grateful for the relationships established by our founders and the visionary legacy we inherited and continue to strive for. Our mission is to provide innovative and progressive science offerings for students of all ability levels that prepares them to become global citizens living in the twenty-first century.

To fulfill this mission, three years of science courses are required for graduation. This requirement may be met by a variety of combinations that can be tailored to individual student abilities and needs. The Science Department offers a number of courses at different levels of rigor, including many AP courses, and assists students in choosing the program that best suits their abilities and academic goals. Students are encouraged to get a broad background across the various fields of science before specializing in one area.  The normal sequence recommended for college bound students is Physical Science (9), Biology (10), Chemistry (11), and Physics (12). Students pursuing higher education should be aware that many institutions require at least three years of science at the high school level for admission.

The Science Department offers a four-year accelerated science program designed for students who have a strong interest in preparing for a career in science, engineering, computer science or related fields. Students electing this option will complete the following course sequence in lieu of the sequence listed above. Pre-AP Biology-honors in grade 9, Chemistry Honors or AP Chemistry in grade 10, AP Biology in grade 11 and AP Physics in grade 12. Eleventh and twelfth grade students may obtain college credit for AP courses. Selected students will be invited to test for the Accelerated Science Program in April. Invitations to join the Accelerated Science Program will be offered to up to twenty-four selected students in early May. All students in accelerated science are required to participate in an intensive twenty-hour summer session.

The links on the side will direct you to each field within the Science Department and will provide valuable information about individual courses, extracurricular activities and science electives.
