LIEUTENANT COLONEL STEVEN L. DAHLGREN, USA (RETIRED)
Lieutenant Colonel Dahlgren was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 1, 1947. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business economics from North Dakota State University, where he was a Distinguished Military Graduate. He was commissioned a Regular Army Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in 1969 through the university's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Program.
After attending the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, and Ranger School at Fort Benning, GA, he served with the 82d Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Next, he attended the Jungle Operations Training Course en route to Vietnam where he served as an infantry rifle platoon leader, reconnaissance platoon leader and infantry company commander with the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). Following Vietnam, he served in Alaska as a staff officer and an airborne infantry company commander.
Lieutenant Colonel Dahlgren had subsequent tours of duty at Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and Fort Sheridan, Illinois. His other assignments include Personnel Staff Officer, Assistant Brigade Operations Officer, Battalion Logistics Officer, Finance Company Commander, Battalion Operations Officer, Battalion Executive Officer, Division Operations Officer, Aide-de-Camp, and Recruiting Battalion Commander. In 1987 he was selected to command an infantry battalion.
In his final active duty military assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Dahlgren served as the Professor of Military Science and Chairperson of the Department of Leadership and Military Science at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Whitewater, Wisconsin. He had a previous three-year assignment as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho.
While at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, LTC Dahlgren's assignment was interrupted by duty in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm, where he served as a War Plans Officer for the United States Army Forces Central Command. He voluntarily retired from the Army on 30 June 1992 after more than 23 years of active service.
His other military and civilian schooling includes the Jumpmaster Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Arts degree in business management.
Among his awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4 awards), Combat Infantryman's Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and Ranger Tab.
Lieutenant Colonel Dahlgren has been employed as the Senior Army Instructor at Cretin-Derham Hall since June 1992. He and his wife Judi, a native of Fargo, North Dakota, reside in Bloomington, MN. They have three daughters: Jamie Glover, a physician practicing in Fort Walton Beach, FL; Kristin Olson, a former elementary school teacher residing in Eden Prairie, MN; and Laurie Dahlgren, a junior high school social studies teacher in Bloomington, MN.
