What is Empty Bowls?
Empty Bowls is a "hunger banquet" event sponsored by the Cretin-Derham Hall community under the leadership and direction of students. Working hand-in-hand with faculty, staff, alumni/ae, parents, area schools, artisans, businesses and civic organizations, student leaders seek to increase awareness of and raise funds to provide long-term hunger relief by supporting Heifer International. Empty Bowls is held annually in late winter/early spring. The 2009 - 2010 event will be held on February 10, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (lunch) and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (dinner) at CDH. Admission is free and open to the public.
Guests will be invited to offer a $10.00 donation per person, select a ceramic bowl handmade by local artisans and art students and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread. Soups, bread and silent auction items are generously donated by many local restaurants including. Proceeds will be donated to Heifer International, an organization whose goal is to end world hunger by providing livestock, seed, and other essential items needed to assist families in developing nations to become self-sufficient.
In partnership with our students, staff, parents and friends, Cretin-Derham Hall was able to contribute $8,500 to Heifer International following the 2009 event and more then $48,000 over the past 7 years. This event is proof that all people, especially young adults care about the world and that they can make a difference.
We are extremely fortunate to have a partnership with so many friends of Cretin-Derham Hall who play such a vital role in the success of this event. Our hope is that these partnerships continue because together we’ll make a significant difference in the fight against hunger in our world.
