Women's BasketballGame Summaries
At Champlin Park (48-62-L)
The
Raiders couldn’t handle the pressure that Champlin Park put on them in their
season opener, and fell by 14 points in this non-conference game. The Raiders committed 24 turnovers and shot
just 33% from the field in the loss.
Ninth grader, Jordyn Alt, had a break-out game in her first varsity
start. She finished with 18 points and
10 rebounds, notching, what is sure to be one of many, double-double efforts in
her career. Kiersten Johnson overcame a
tough shooting night to finish with 8 points, while Brianna Muetzel pulled down
9 boards and dished 3 assists.
Vs.
Edina (37-42-L)
The
Raiders kept this one close the entire way against the Hornets and showed the
amazing potential that they have. The Raiders played
much better in this one and battled the whole night. In the end, the Raiders had a chance, down
three, to take a shot to tie the game with ten seconds left. Unfortunately, the referee called the
inbounds pass out of bounds and the Raiders fell to the Hornets. No Raider finished in double figures. Jordyn Alt led the way again with 8
points. Fellow ninth grader Celia
Kuenster chipped in 7 points and 4 rebounds.
Brianna Muetzel had 4 boards and 3 steals, while Julia Knippel dished 5
assists.
Vs.
Stillwater (75-81-L)
The Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders fell
behind early against the Ponies, and despite a furious effort, couldn’t notch
their first win of the season. The
Raiders fell behind by 13 points in the first half, but found a way to cut the
Pony lead to five at the break. A
furious effort coming out of halftime led the Raiders to their first lead of
the game early in the second half.
Unfortunately, that lead was short-lived and, despite scoring 75 points,
the Raiders fell short. Ninth graders
Jordyn Alt (22 points and 9 boards) and Celia Kuenster (18 points) led the way
offensively for CDH. Julia Knippel also
had a strong game, finishing with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3
steals. Brianna Muetzel chipped in 8 points
and 8 rebounds in the loss.
Vs.
Roseville (33-61-L)
The
CDH Raiders took one on the chin against Roseville, despite getting out to an
early lead. CDH shot just 10/52 (19%)
from the field, making just five field goals in each half. Roseville physically dominated CDH and ran
away with an easy victory. Julia Knippel
and Jordyn Alt each scored 7 points for CDH.
Brianna Muetzel pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds.
Vs.
Hastings (52-49-W)
The
CDH Raiders got their first win of the season despite another poor shooting
performance. CDH jumped out to an early
5-0 lead before their offense stalled a bit.
However, they took a 6-point lead into the locker room at halftime and
were able to extend their lead to 9 points coming out of the break. Unfortunately some untimely turnovers and
missed shots allowed Hastings to regain the lead late in the game. Luckily, clutch free throws from Maureen
Czech, (who was making her season debut coming off an Achilles injury) and
Celia Kuenster gave CDH the lead back for good.
Jordyn Alt led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down a game-high 10
rebounds, notching her second double-double in her short career. Maureen Czech made two big three-pointers and
2 big free throws in her debut on her way to 8 points. Alex Kietzer had a nice
game as well, finishing with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Brianna Muetzel finished with 5 rebounds, 2
assists and 2 steals, while Julia Knippel chipped in 3 boards, 2 assists and 2
steals in the win.
Vs.
Winona Cotter (37-60-L)
The
Raiders couldn’t keep the momentum going as they ran into Winona Cotter. CDH kept it close, trailing by only one point
at the break. However, swiss cheese-like
defense in the second half allowed Cotter to run away with this one. Only Brianna Muetzel (12points) finished in
double figures in scoring for the Raiders.
Muetzel also pulled down 10 boards, giving her the first double-double
of her career. Julia Knippel hit for 8
points and grabbed 2 steals. Alex
Kietzer (7), Jordyn Alt (6) and Maureen Czech (5) all rebounded well for the
Raiders in their loss.
At
Hill-Murray (26-51-L)
The
Raiders were no match for the top-ranked team in the state! The Raiders capitalized on poor shooting by
Hill-Murray to keep the deficit to 7 at halftime. However, the Pioneers turned up the defensive
pressure and the Raiders managed only 10 second half points. No CDH players finished in double
figures. Brianna Muetzel led the way
with 6 points, while Jordyn Alt pulled down 8 rebounds in the loss.
Vs.
Wayzata at Hill-Murray Tournament (26-67-L)
The
Trojans dominated in this one. They tore
apart the Raider zone with ease and limited CDH’s shot selection with their own
strong defense. Once again, the Raiders
struggled to find points. Again, no CDH
player was in double figures. Julia
Knippel finished the game with 7 points, while Alex Kietzer and Jordyn Alt each
chipped in 6. Only 5 Raiders got into
the scoring column in the loss.
Vs. Duluth East at Hill-Murray
Tournament (53-66-L)
The
Raiders were doomed by another terrible start.
They let the Greayhounds out to a 31-9 lead before making a 17-2 run of
their own just before half. Unfortunately,
the Raiders couldn’t keep the momentum on their side in the second half. They hit just 15/27 shots from the foul line
and shot just 16/44 for the game. Julia
Knippel led the way with 19 points before fouling out. Jordyn Alt added 11 points and 6 boards. Grace Howard had a breakout game with 9 points,
5 rebounds, and 2 steals as her enthusiasm led the comeback.
Vs.
Chaska at Hill-Murray Tournament (28-36-L)
The
broken record continued with the Hawks taking a 13-0 lead over the Raiders to
start the game. Once again, the Raiders
rallied behind a 13-4 run to finish the half.
CDH shot just 4/24 in the first half and just 9/40 for the game. Another poor free throw performance (4/16)
doomed any comeback chances for the Raiders.
No Raider scored in double figures.
Jordyn Alt led the way with 8 points to go along with 6 rebounds and a
steal. Celia Kuenster added 5 points, 3
boards and 2 assists. Hannah Howard
provided a big spark off the bench with 5 rebounds and a steal, while Maureen
Czech grabbed 4 steals.
At White Bear Lake (44-65-L)
The
Raiders gave a much better effort in this one as they battled one of the top
ten teams in the Metro. There was no big
lead to try to erase this time, even though the Bears hit 4/8 from behind the
arc, and the Bear’s lead stayed under a dozen in the first half. However, in the second half the Bears made a
run and extended the lead quickly. This
time the Raiders battled hard and, despite losing by 21, made a strong
statement with their effort and hustle.
Alt once again led the team with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Hannah Howard had her second-straight strong
showing with 6 points.
Vs.
Forest Lake (36-40-L)
The
Raiders' scoring drought continued in this loss to the Rangers. This was a close game the entire way and, in
the end, it came down to free throws.
The Rangers hit 12/16 from the stripe and the Raiders managed only
4/12. Jordyn Alt was the only Raider in
double-figures with 13 points, 10 boards and 2 steals. Brianna Muetzel had a fantastic game with 5
points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and just one turnover. Hannah Howard led a strong effort off the
bench with 5 points and 2 steals.
Maureen Czech dished 4 assists and Julia Knippel grabbed 3 steals in the
loss.
Vs.
Woodbury (62-76-L)
The
Raiders battled hard against a strong opponent and nearly managed to sneak a
win. Woodbury came into the game
undefeated in the SEC and with just one loss on the year. Woodbury took an early lead, but the Raiders
made their move midway through the first half and led by six points for most of
the half. The Royals went on a run to
end the first half and took a six-point lead into the locker room. Another Royal run just after the break
extended the lead to a dozen, and that is where it stayed. Despite a strong effort, the Raiders dropped
to 1-5 in the SEC. Jordyn Alt led all
scorers with 26 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocked
shots. Julia Knippel showed outstanding
senior leadership, hitting for 15 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2
steals. Brianna Muetzel hit 4/5 shots on
her way to 9 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Maureen Czedh accounted for 18 Raider points,
scoring 6 and assisting on 6 other baskets.
East
Ridge (40-34-W)
The
Raiders got back into the win column against the Raptors. The Raiders got off to a bit of a slow start,
but built a 14-10 lead at the break. The
lead was extended midway through the second half, as CDH led by double
digits. However, a few key shots by East
Ridge allowed them to creep closer as the game went on. However, despite a few mental errors by the
Raiders in the waning moments, they held on for the win. Jordyn Alt led all scorers with 16 points and
pulled down 13 rebounds while grabbing 4 steals. Julia Knippel played dazzling defense while
scoring 7 points, dishing 4 assists and making 2 steals. Celia Kuenster had a solid game of her own
with 6 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Kiersten Johnson was also terrific
defensively with 6 steals on the night.
At
North St. Paul (46-49-L)
What
a game! The Raiders struggled in the
first half, falling behind by a dozen at the break. Fortunately they were able to right the ship,
hitting for 28 second-half points. The
Raiders got the ball back a final time with 12 seconds remaining. Julia Knippel got a great look at a
three-pointer from the top of the key that would have won it for the Raiders. Unfortunately, the shot rimmed out and the
Raiders were forced to foul. Knippel led
the way for CDH, hitting 4 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 14 points. Jordyn Alt finished with 11 points, 8
rebounds and 2 assists. Brianna Muetzel
pulled down 5 boards, dished 2 assists and grabbed 2 steals.
Vs.
Mounds View (38-52-L)
This
one was much closer than the score indicates.
The Raiders played a tremendous first half, going into the locker room
tied at 25 with a very good Mounds View squad.
In what was their best first half performance to date, the Raiders got a
huge spark off the bench from Alex Kietzer who crashed the offensive boards
hard and led the way with six first half points. Following the break, the Mustangs applied a
1-3-1 zone that gave the Raiders fits.
The tall and lanky Mounds View guards forced turnover after turnover and
converted to lay-ups. No Raider managed
to make more than one basket in the second half, with CDH managing just 13
total points. Kietzer led the way with 9
points, 6 rebounds and a steal. Jordyn
Alt and Julia Knippel each added 8 points.
Knippel had a strong game adding 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 2
steals. Alt also pulled down 6 boards. Brianna Muetzel finished with 6 points, 9
rebounds and 2 assists.
At
Park (40-51-L)
Ouch! This was a tough one! Park jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never
looked back as they handed the Raiders another loss. The Wolfpack used stifling defense to hold
CDH to just 14 first half points. The
Raiders played better in the second half, but could never really make a
run. Julia Knippel was the only Raider
in double figures and finished with 11 points.
Jordyn Alt led CDH with 5 rebounders, while Knippel dished 3 assists and
Brianna Muetzel grabbed 3 steals.
At
Stillwater (57--72-L)
The
Raiders played Stillwater tough for the second time this season. Jordyn Alt hit 18 of her 20 points in the
first half, which helped to keep the deficit at seven at the half. The score remained close for most of the
second half, with the Raiders cutting the Pony lead to just 5 with five minutes
left. However, the Ponies made a run in
the last few minutes and extended the lead to 15. Alt finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Celia Kuenster and Julia Knippel each chipped
in 7 points. Annie Johnson hit two clutch
threes off the bench and Maureen Czech dished 6 assists in the loss.
Vs.
Roseville (43-65-L)
Despite
battling hard, CDH couldn’t pull off the upset win. CDH kept it close in the first half behind 6
first half points from Celia Kuenster.
However, Roseville’s post player torched CDH with 15 points of her own
in the opening period. CDH held
Roseville to just 7 second half baskets, however the put Roseville on the foul
line 28 times, and they hit on 20 of those attempts. It was a physical war that Roseville won
handily. Jordyn Alt and Julia Knippel
each chipped in 9 points to go with 7 from Kuenster. Alt also pulled down 7 rebounds, while
Knippel dished 3 assists and grabbed 2 steals.
At
Hastings (40-36-W)
CDH
got their third Suburban East win and second over Hastings this season. CDH led almost the entire way. They jumped out to an 8-point lead near the
end of the first half, but gave up three straight offensive rebounds to allow
Hastings back in it. The second half was
more of the same. CDH held the lead
until the four-minute mark, when Hastings took a one-point lead. However, CDH battled back and regained the
lead with just over three minutes to go.
Jordyn Alt hit a big three down the stretch to give CDH the lead for
good. Despite missing free throws, CDH
managed to hang on for the win. Alt led
the way offensively with 14points. She
also pulled down 7 boards, dished 3 assists and blocked two shots. Muetzel had her second-straight game with
perfect shooting, hitting all 3 of her shots on her way to six points to go
along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Hannah Howard started her first game of the season and chipped in 4
points and 4 rebounds. Maureen Czech
managed to corral 5 rebounds from her point guard position as well.
Vs.
White Bear Lake (36-69-L)
CDH couldn’t
keep up in this one as they got blown out by the top-ranked team in the
conference. White Bear Lake just had too
much fire power, out-scoring the Raiders by fifteen points in the first half
and eighteen points in the second half.
No Raider scored in double figures.
Jordyn Alt finished with 8 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked
shots. Annie Johnson hit two big threes
off the bench and finished with 6 points, as did Kiersten Johnson. Celia Kuenster hit 2/3 from the field and 2/2
from the stripe on her way to six points of her own. Julia Knippel led the Raiders with 5 assists.
At
Forest Lake (50-48-W)
The Raiders
avenged an earlier loss to the Rangers with a nice win over their conference
rivals. This game was a battle. The Raiders led by two at halftime and
expanded their lead to a dozen midway through the second half. However, the Rangers stuck around and battled
back, forcing some key CDH turnovers late in the game. In the end, the Raiders made their free
throws and got defensive stops when it mattered and hung on for the two-point
win. Julia Knippel was on fire
offensively, hitting on 7 of her 10 shot attempts. She finished with 17 points to go along with
5 boards, and 3 assists. Jordyn Alt hit
10/12 from the line to finish with 16 points and a dozen rebounds. Grace Howard pulled down 7 rebounds and
Brianna Muetzel dished 4 assists and grabbed 4 steals in the win.
At
Woodbury (40-52-L)
The Raiders
battled the Royals, but still came up short in this Suburban East Conference
game. A tough triangle and two defense
stifled the Royals for much of the first half as the Woodbury stars were unable
to get many shots. The game was tied for
much of the first half as the Royals struggled to find any offense that
worked. Despite the great defense, the
Raiders didn’t find any more success than Woodbury on the offensive end of the
floor, and the Raiders went into the locker room down six at the half. The second half brought more of the same, as
CDH forced Woodbury into very difficult shots.
However, midway through the second period, the Royals made a run behind
three straight transition baskets, and the Raiders saw the deficit grow to a
sixteen. But, the Raiders battled back
behind their full court press and kept the Royals from running away with it. The Raiders managed to hold Woodbury’s best
scorers (25 ppg and 17 ppg) to just 11 points and 9 points. Jordyn Alt led the Raiders with 14 points, 8
rebounds and 2 steals. Bridget Kopp had
a strong game off the bench, hitting for 8 points and pulling down 5
boards.
Vs.
East Ridge (61-36-W)
The Raiders got
their first “easy” win of the season behind a total team effort. All 15 players played and 12 got into the
scoring column. The Raptors were able to
keep it close for much of the first half, but the Raiders broke it open in the
last five minutes and led by 14 at the break.
The Raiders cruised home from there, securing their fifth SEC win of the
season. Julia Knippel led all scorers
with 16 points on 9/15 shooting. She
also had 3 boards and 3 steals. Maureen
Czech hit 2 big 3-pointers to go along with 2 steals and 2 assists. Jordyn Alt had another solid game with 6
points, 8 boards, a steal and a blocked shot.
Hannah Howard chipped in 5 points, 5 rebounds and an assist, while Bridget
Kopp finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Kelly Cullen scored her first varsity points
of her career, hitting on both of her shots (5 points).
Vs.
Mounds View (47-60-L)
The Raiders
played well for most of the game, but couldn’t manage a victory over Mounds
View. CDH started the game strong,
leading early on and keeping the Mounds View lead to just 4 points for much of
the half. However, a tough no-call on
the offensive end ended up with a big 3-pointer by the Mustangs and led to a
7-0 run by the Mustangs to end the half.
The Raiders started the second half with three defensive lapses in a
row, before getting their act together.
Unfortunately, the lead ballooned to 20 and it was an uphill climb from
there. However, the Raiders did make a
run. CDH used a stifling full court
press to cut the lead to 9 with just under 2 minutes to go. However, that was as close as they would come
as Mounds View hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the win. Julia Knippel led the team with 10
points. Despite a tough shooting night,
Jordyn Alt finished with 8 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, a steal and a blocked
shot. Brianna Muetzel hit on 3/6 shots
and finished with 6 points, while Grace Howard dished 3 assists.
Vs.
Park (44-53-L)
The Raiders
jumped out to a quick start as all four seniors found themselves in the
starting line-up on senior night.
Unfortunately that lead was short-lived as the Wolfpack extended their
own lead to ten at the break. Park
maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half, despite a pesky
pressing effort by the Raiders. In the
end it was senior Julia Knippel that led the way offensively for the Raiders in
the loss. She finished with 15 points
and 3 dimes. Jordyn Alt hit finished her
regular season with 15 points, 8 boards and 3 assists. Grace Howard chipped in 3 points and 5
rebounds, while fellow seniors Kiersten Johnson (4 points, 1 steal) and Marinna
McDermott (3 steals) also made their presence felt.
