Roles & Responsibilities in the College Admission Process


  • Be an active participant in the exploration process.
  • Encourage your student to make frequent use of his/her Naviance account.  Students were given accounts on Jumpstart Your Future Day in January.
  • Show interest, give support, and help define reasonable limits.  Help your student to sort out objective and subjective factors that make the difference between reasoned judgment and emotional reactions.
  • Offer your feedback and advice when your student is considering criteria for college choices.
  • Help your student to be a discerning consumer amidst the marketing inherent in this process.
  • Visit campuses with your son/daughter, but let the student be the one to be interviewed.  Ask questions.
  • Be certain your student follows procedures properly and completes all admission requirements by the stated deadlines.
  • Carefully consider what a good college “fit” is for your student.
  • Encourage your student to keep up with schoolwork and maintain good study habits during the senior year – foster your student’s independence by encouraging time management and personal organization.
  • Provide consolation, support and perspective should an admission denial be received.  When the news is good, seize the opportunity to praise and congratulate your child.
  • Know when to bow out of this decision process and allow your student to make his/her choice.
  • Encourage patience, persistence and a sense of humor throughout this often stressful process.


  • Take an active role in deciding your future.  Don’t let anxiety or stress about your decision prevent you from engaging in exploring your options.
  • Be sure to check your Naviance account frequently.  This will be our primary way of communicating information to you during the next year and a half.
  • Think about what criteria are important to you and put these factors in priority order – for example, is studying a particular subject more important to you than the location of the school?
  • Take it step by step.  There is a lot of work to do and you will be busy with your studies at CDH, activities and work.  Keep yourself on a schedule.
  • Stay organized.  Keep track of information and try not to get overwhelmed.
  • STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MEETING COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES.  This means that you must have your requests for CDH materials (transcripts, senior schedule, school reports etc.) made at least two weeks prior to the deadlines – otherwise there is no guarantee that your materials will be sent on time.
  • Families are responsible for sending college admission test scores to colleges.  When you register for your college admission tests, be sure to have your scores sent to CDH for your permanent record and for advising purposes.  You may also indicate on your test registration colleges you would like your scores sent to for free.  If you don’t know the colleges you will be applying to when you register, or you would like to see how you do before you submit your scores, you may have your scores sent later by ACT or the College Board for a fee per test result.  All information on how to send score reports can be found on the ACT or College Board websites.  CDH School Code is 242245.
  • Take the initiative to make the connection with admission representatives at the schools that interest you.  It is best that the applicant make the phone calls, ask questions and make any arrangements for visiting.
  • Appreciate that parents and others who will want to give you advice have your best interests at heart and do have experience worth listening to even if you disagree with what they are saying.
  • Your future is important.  Make sure that you have options at the end of high school by taking responsibility for your future.  Ask for help and guidance when you need it!

Cretin-Derham Hall

  • Assist students and their families explore post-secondary options.
  • Guide students through the college search and admission process.
  • Act as a resource in solving problems, conflicts.
  • Provide academic/emotional support.
  • Complete counselor or teacher recommendations as necessary.
  • Serve as liaison between parents/students and prospective colleges.
  • Host college representatives at Cretin-Derham Hall.
  • Inform students of private scholarship opportunities.
  • Send supporting college application materials (transcripts, recommendations, school reports, senior schedules, CDH Profile) in a timely fashion.
  • Send mid-year senior grades as requested.
  • Send the final high school transcripts to the college where the student enrolls.  In accordance with professional ethical guidelines, CDH policy is to send only ONE final transcript per student.
