Timeline for Junior Parents

January

  • Discuss with your student important issues in choosing a college – size, location, religious affiliation etc. Determine how college costs will affect your student’s choices.

  • Ask your student about the online college planning materials from “Jumpstart” and go over them together.

  • Remember to schedule your Parent/Student Junior Conference on-line. Meetings are held with a guidance/college counselor and are scheduled for one full class hour.

    February - March

  • Attend your Parent/Student Junior Conference with a guidance counselor where you will get your registration code for your parent accounts on the Naviance Family Connection.

  • Begin to research schools by contacting admission offices, visiting web sites, using library resources and talking to people. Have your student post his or her tentative choices on Naviance.

  • Be sure your student registers for and takes the appropriate college admission tests (ACT &/or SAT) this spring. Information on test registration, deadlines, and test preparation is available at www.act.org or www.collegeboard.com. CDH school code is 242245

  • Plan some college visits during the week of spring break.

    April

  • Attend the CDH Education Fair in April in the Student Activity Center. Approximately 100 schools will be represented.

  • Remind your student to complete the planning items listed under “checklist” on the Naviance Family Connection. These items include two career interest inventories which can help provide college major and career ideas.

    May

  • Formulate with your student a tentative “short list” of schools. Be sure to plan for “reach”, “target” and “safety” schools according to your student’s academic abilities and the admission criteria of the schools under consideration.

  • Consult with your student’s guidance counselor if you have particular concerns or questions.

    Be sure to check your Naviance Family Connection frequently and remind your student to keep his or her account updated.

Summer Months

  • Visit college campuses and revise your student’s list of schools as necessary.
  • Encourage your student to begin work on his or her college essays and/or an activities resume.
