CDH Boys Hockey: Finding Leadership Through New Voices

by Athletics Staff

The CDH Boys Hockey team is off to a 4–2 start this season, and while the record reflects solid early success, head coach Matt Funk believes the most important growth is happening beneath the surface. With high expectations and a program standard that includes three state tournament appearances in the past four seasons, this year’s Raiders are learning how to lead in a new way.

“This season is about finding leadership through new voices,” Funk said. “We graduated an outstanding senior class last year, along with three players who would have been seniors this season. That’s a lot of experience and presence to replace.”

Stepping into that role are this year’s captains and senior leaders:

  • Charlie Engstrom ’26 (C)
  • Vinny Millard ’27 (C)
  • Mav Timmons ’26 (A)
  • Jonny Bloedow ’28 (A)

According to Funk, the transition hasn’t been instant—but that was expected.

“They’re all finding their voice and their own style of leadership,” he said. “Each of them brings something different, and they’re learning what works best for their personality. It’s been a slow start in that regard, but that’s part of the process.”

Despite the learning curve, confidence in the group remains high.

“I’m very confident this leadership group will find what works,” Funk added. “They were chosen by their teammates for a reason, and as they continue to grow into those roles, it’s going to elevate our entire team. They also have other great leaders in the room that can lean on as well.”

That growth will be tested soon, as CDH faces a challenging stretch of games that will help define the season. The Raiders take on St. Thomas Academy on December 27 at 2:00 PM at Aldrich Arena, followed by a demanding tournament at Dakotah Ice Arena from January 1–3, where they will face state powers Edina and Moorhead.

“These are the kinds of games that show you who you are,” Funk said. “They demand leadership, composure, and accountability. They’re great opportunities for this group to continue finding its identity.”

With a strong foundation, a 4–2 start, and leadership that is steadily finding its footing, CDH has its sights set on returning to the state tournament for the fourth time in five years. As the season progresses, the Raiders’ success may hinge not just on talent—but on the confidence and voices of those leading the way.
