1960s

Michael Mardell'65, now a resident of Sun City, Arizona, was one of six contestants who competed in the annual Dancing with the Sun City Stars competition put on by Utah Ballroom Dance Company on March 3, 2017.  Without Mike's knowledge, his wife had entered his name in the drawing to select three male and three female contestants for this popular competition.  Much to his shock, his name was chosen, and he was a good sport and participated.

Contestants had 4 days to learn their dance routines.  Mike and his professional dance partner, Chloe Elstone of the Utah Ballroom Dance Company, danced a fast and energetic swing dance to the famous 1950s song "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Hailey and the Comets. Three judges scored each contestant's dance. Mike got the highest score--two "10s" and a "9", for a total of 29. The audience voted and selected Mike Mardell should as the winner. He was nicknamed the "Dancing Dentist."

Mike was awarded the Mirror Ball Trophy. One of the three judges was another Cretin alum, Bill Pearson'66.
