Alpine Ski

by Carrie Freitag, Head Coach

Hello - are you looking for something to do this winter? A new activity that will get you moving, get you outdoors, and refine your skills while keeping you active? If so, consider the CDH Alpine Ski team.

CDH Alpine is a co-ed team and we have a no-cut roster. We train at Afton Alps. Being part of CDH Alpine makes you a part of a fabulous, close-knit team, and gets you outside and on the hill.

All students are welcome, as we have room for skiers of all abilities. The CDH Alpine Ski Team can increase your skiing skills just by being on the snow four days a week, even if your goals are simply to become a more proficient skier. We can help you learn to love skiing (more!) as you become more confident and comfortable. As a member of CDH Alpine, you will also have access to a nice discount on a season pass at Afton Alps (the only fee you pay for Alpine).

Please contact me or one of the captains listed below if you have any questions or would like to join.  Hope to see you on the slopes,

Head Coach Carrie Freitag: cfreitag@c-dh.org

Captain Dylan Jacobsenjacobson.dylan@c-dh.org

Captain Isabella Korziliuskorzilius.isabella.20@c-dh.org

Boys Basketball

by Tony Yazbeck, Assistant Coach

The Cretin-Derham Hall boys basketball team opened the season with a new look. After graduating four starters off their state championship team, the Raiders are being led by some new faces. Jaeden King ’19 and Amari Carter ’20 are the only returners to the CDH lineup. King is regarded as the best shooter in the state and has signed with Division 1 Western Illinois for next season. New additions to the Raiders include transfers Curtis Jones ’20 (Minneapolis South) and Karsten Broadley ’19 (Fosston), who have both made an impact to start the year. Also joining the Raiders this year is Tre Holloman ’22. Tre is regarded as one of the best national players in the Class of 2022. As of Saturday, Tre has received Division 1 offers from Minnesota, Texas, and Baylor.

As of Wednesday, CDH has started the season with a 2-1 record. After dropping a tough game to #5 ranked Wayzata (69-63), the team has bounced back with wins over Apple Valley (75-57) and #10 Rochester John Marshall (81-64).

Key games ahead for the Raiders are Friday at East Ridge, and then Alumni Night on Friday, December 21, when we host STA.

Boys Hockey

by Matt Funk, Head Coach

The #9 ranked Boys Hockey Team officially started their season in early December. The first game was December 1 at home against #6 Eden Prairie Eagles. The Raiders lost a hard fought game 3-1 with captain Danny Magnuson ’19 scoring the only goal. The star of the game was goaltender George Maguire ’19. George stopped 35 out of the 38 shots he faced against an explosive Eden Prairie offense, including 27 out of 29 shots in the first two periods. His effort was critical in keeping the score tied at the end of the first period as the team faced three consecutive Eden Prairie power plays. It was a great start for one of the senior leaders.

The second game of the year came against cross-town conference rival, Woodbury Royals. The Raiders got back on track with a big 7-3 victory on the road. The Raiders were led by captain Matthew Gleason ’20, who scored a hat trick and registered his 100th career point. The Raiders also experienced a few firsts with Preston Thelemann ’20 and Mike Walsh ’20 scoring their first varsity goals. Magnuson and Grayson Milosch ’19 added the other two goals.

The last piece of news is that captain Matthew Gleason announced his verbal commitment to Colorado College in November. Matthew has established himself as one of the top forwards in the state of Minnesota. He was one of the leading scorers in the MN Elite League and led his team to the league championship with a hat trick in the championship game. He also performed well on a National Stage this summer with his third trip to the National Camp in New York, which pits the top 100 skaters from across the country in each age group. Congratulations Matthew!

Girls Hockey

by Brooke White-Lancette, Head Coach

The girls have had fun and exciting events on and off the ice so far this season. See the photos!

Girls Basketball Team

As of Monday afternoon, the Girls Basketball Team started the season with a 2-3-0 record. The ladies have a BIG home stand coming up. They take on Simley on Thursday and East Ridge on Saturday. Come out and support your Raiders!

Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 22 for the First Annual Girls Basketball Alumni Day. If you have any questions or want to RSVP, you can email Coach Flint. Please pass this along to all CDH and Derham Hall former players, regardless of graduation year.

Boys Swim & Dive Team

by Mike Steineman '92, Head Coach

The Boys Swimming & Diving Team's season is underway. Head Coach Mike Steineman ’92 is back for his 23rd year, along with his sister Kate Steineman ’94, and Head Girls Swimming & Diving Coach Shannon van Oosterom. Helping out on the swimming side are Adam Weis ’05 and Hannah Zobitz ’13. Diving Coaches Annette Crews and Katie Magnuson ’88 shore up the rest of the coaching staff and will be working with six new divers this year!

Captains Rory King ’19 and Sam Martin ’19 will lead the Raiders this year. Please consider joining us for our home dual meets at St. Catherine University's newly remodeled Butler Center Pool. Also, follow all of the action on Twitter @RaidersSwimDive or the Meet Mobile app (download the app to your Android or Apple device and then search for Cretin-Derham Hall or CDH).

Wrestling Team

by Dan Willaert, Head Coach

The Raiders Wrestling Team has started the season with a great run of matches! The season kicked off last Friday with a home victory against Saint Thomas Academy. This was followed by a social at Shamrock's for Alumni Night. On Saturday, CDH hosted Benilde-St. Margaret's, St. Agnes, and Medford for a quadrangular meet, going 2-1 on the day with a close loss to Medford but winning the other two matches handily. Then on December 5, the Raiders traveled to Minneapolis Southwest and came away with another decisive victory.

One of the keys to the Raiders' success early in the season has been the depth of the roster. For the first time in a long time, we have two or more wrestlers for most weight classes. These wrestlers are working extremely hard and are making sacrifices for the good of the team to put a competitive lineup on the mat. Younger wrestlers are also able to develop properly by wrestling JV and exhibition matches.

The next home event is Thursday, December 20, when CDH will host East Ridge and Henry Sibley. On Friday, December 28, the Raiders will travel to North St. Paul to defend their title from last year in the Polar Duals.

Competition Dance Team

by Ali Pendergrass, Co-Head Coach

The CDH Dance Team is off to a strong start this season. The Varsity and JV Jazz teams each placed fourth and Varsity Kick placed third in their first conference competitions. Click here to see a video from that performance. The dance team will be attending their first invitational competition at Rochester Mayo High School on Saturday, December 15, followed by their second conference competition at Stillwater High School on Wednesday, December 19.

In January, there will be three more opportunities to come out and support our girls at competitions, including Anoka High School on Saturday, January 12; Woodbury High School on Wednesday, January 23 (Conference Finals); and Simley High School on Saturday, January 26. The team will also be performing at Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball games on the following dates: Friday, December 21; Tuesday, January 15; Tuesday, January 22; and Tuesday, January 29.

Counseling

by Joan O'Connell, College Counselor

On Thursday, January 17, the College Counseling and Advancement offices will team up to coordinate the “Jumpstart Your Future/Alumni Career Day” for our CDH junior students.

This is a required school day that will feature sessions in the morning focused on the college search process. The afternoon will consist of alumni career panels with the opportunity to “meet and greet” CDH alumni during the last class hour of the day.

A corresponding program for parents/guardians of junior students, “College Planning for the Class of 2020,” will be Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m.

While parents/guardians who have been through this process before with other children are welcome to attend, this evening is designed for those who are beginning the college search process with their child for the first time. Watch for more information and invitations via email. Post-high school planning meetings with junior families will begin in January. Information and scheduling instructions will be emailed to you after the first of the year.

JROTC

by LTC Jamie Fischer, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski

We continue to be busy in JROTC over the winter months. Our new Diamond Officers have been active in leading the Brigade. Weekly labs have focused on Cadet Challenge – our annual physical fitness evaluation and team building. Every Cadet has participated in Cadet Challenge to their full ability. We have conducted the Squad Drill Competition. This competition gives our sophomores the chance to really start plying their leadership skills on a small scale. All elements of the Brigade did a great job and the squads that were selected as 'best' were great.

Diamond Officers have selected projects for improving the corps of cadets; each Cadet volunteers to lead a more complex activity that either improves the Brigade or completes a key task for our program.

Our Color Guard just completed another round of boot camp and will do this again at the start of Tri 3. We are performing for select basketball and hockey home games and will start to prepare for competitions soon.

The Armed Precision Drill Team, led by team captain Mary Andrzejek ’19, continues to hone its skills to carry on the 100-year tradition of this team.  Membership for the team has increased significantly as well.

The Unarmed Regulation Drill Team under the leadership of Margaret Musolf ’20 is busy preparing the team for the Upper Midwest JROTC Challenge hosted by CDH on Friday, February 1, 2019. After Christmas break, we will start to prepare for a competition in Sioux Falls, SD, in the early spring.

Flight Club will be taking a tour of Holman Field this month.

On December 7, we held our annual Dining In in the commons. Read more and see the photos.

Our All-JROTC Service Project – Junior Achievement in a Day – takes place on Wednesday, December 19. We will travel to three schools and our Cadets will present the Kindergarten through 5th-grade curriculum to the students. Our students grow from this service project and always do a great job. This service project alone will total approximately 1,500 service hours for our community.

The Rifle Team has continued its strong performance in multiple air rifle meets and will be competing against teams during the Upper Midwest JROTC Challenge in early February, as well as additional meets throughout February and into April.

We have conducted our best squad competition and here are the winners!!!!
