Girls Golf

By Megan Smith ’00, Head Coach

Congratulations to the 2022 Girls Golf Teams! The Development Team finished their season at Highland Golf Course on May 18 and the JV and Varsity teams competed in their conference finals at Oak Glen Golf Course on May 19.  The team banquet was held at the Town & Country Club. Achievements were recognized and the following awards were presented:

"Most Valuable Player" to Katie Votel '23

"Rookie of the Year" to Lauren Bengtson ‘24

“Senior Leader” to Natasha Krieger ‘22

Although the Varsity and JV teams were new to conference match play this year, the golf team has talent, depth, and enthusiasm - they will be ready to compete on the course in 2023!

Boys Golf

by Bob Kinne, Head Coach

Good luck to ninth grader Joe Honsa who qualified for the state tournament as an individual, shooting a first round 79 and second round 77, placing fourth overall in the section.  He will be competing June 14 and 15 at Bunker Hills, Coon Rapids.

Softball

By Aaron Vail, Head Coach

Congratulations to the CDH Softball team who finished the season as Section 4AAA Runner-Ups after losing a hard-fought battle with St. Anthony Village last week. The team really excelled the last half of the season winning 11 of our last 14 games. We look forward to a huge season next year! Go Raiders!!

Track and Field

By Chris Babcock, Head Coach

The Spring of 2022 saw a return to pre-COVID like experiences on the track and in the field. The slow start to the Spring worked to our advantage as we had a team that was pretty inexperienced, but how could they not be with a complete loss of a season at the high school level and some middle schools didn't return to track and field until this year. This extra time meant that we were able to really train and gain experience in the fundamentals of the sport of track and field. This season we also returned to our long training home at Macalester College, which gave us the opportunity to experience all of the events before competition. Our team was still small by comparison to those we competed against at the conference and section level but we still managed to put some athletes into finals in both meets. Senior triple jumper Durelle Hall '22 placed 4th in the conference and 5th in the section. He also jumped 43' 2 1/4", far enough to make it onto the top 5 all-time best for Cretin-Derham Hall. Sophomore long jumper Jaylen Gayles '24 made it onto the Sophomore/Freshman list with a long jump of 20' 5". Freshman Michael Seifu '25 made the Sophomore/Freshman list in the 300m hurdles.

Boys weren't the only athletes making their mark on the CDH honor rolls this year. Sophomore mid-distance runner Katie Chestovich '24 put her mark on the 800m Sophomore/Freshman board with a time of 2:24.14. In the 300m hurdles Clare Lasure '25 put herself on the Sophomore/Freshman board with a 48.54 effort. Her 17.23 mark in the 100m hurdles was .1 seconds away from the Sophomore/Freshman list as well. So, there is some promise for the future of this team.

All season long the athletes that came out to practice and meets saw success. We did a great deal of measuring our progress in our workouts as well. Those that were able to be consistent and do the fundamental things we were focused on saw their performances improve. We are always looking for more people to come out, even if you are a junior or a senior who is looking for something fun, interesting, and inspiring to do, come out and give it a try.

Consider joining Cross Country! On August 15, the Cross Country season will start in earnest. Summer running will begin in June or early July in preparation. Last year Holy Spirit eighth grader Abby Chestovich earned her way to the State Meet and competed with some of the best runners Minnesota had to offer. This year she will return to the team as a CDH student. Other ninth graders are joining her this year and they would like you to join them too.

The team is small, supportive, and fun. Pre-COVID we had teams of boys and girls numbering 50 plus. Since COVID those numbers have dropped considerably. Cross Country is an accessible sport to most people. Yes, it is running. But you get to be outside with people who are enjoying working out as much as you are and supporting you along the way. Coach Babcock has been the head coach to athletes that have finished Top Three at the State Meet as well as athletes who are just trying to finish and all levels in between. We will have a summer kick off run for new runners of any grade on Monday, July 11 at 7 pm. We will meet at the Monument at the west end of Summit Avenue near the University of St. Thomas and run a distance suited to your experience and fitness level from there. Practices are tailored with the athlete in mind as well as specific demands of the sport. If you would like to find out more about Raiders Cross Country take a look at our websites:

JROTC

By Col. Joe Scrocca, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski

JROTC closed out the 2021-2022 school year in style with ten cadets participating in the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge at Camp Wilderness in Park Rapids, MN, from 1-5 June.  In this CDH-led event, Raider Brigade cadets joined approximately 50 other Army JROTC cadets from Powell Leadership Academy in Minneapolis, Lower Brule Sioux Reservation High School in South Dakota, as well as Devils Lake and Grand Forks High Schools in North Dakota.

While there, the cadets participated in a host of individual leadership and team-building activities that challenged each cadet in different ways.  Some of the activities included daily Army physical training, rock wall climbing, rappelling, a high ropes course, archery, kayaking, and orienteering.

Cadet James Summers,25’ was recognized for his outstanding leadership and teamwork during the week and awarded the Army JROTC Award for Leadership Excellence.

The Junior Officer Exam will be held one final time on Tuesday, 28 June at 9:00 AM for those rising seniors who would like to be promoted to the officer ranks and take on increased leadership responsibilities during their senior year.

We wish all the cadets and families a safe and enjoyable summer.   The JROTC office will be open most days during the summer should anyone need anything.

Theater

CDH Theater wrapped up its season with a bang! The spring musical, "Chicago", was a smashing success. Students performed the show over two weekends of spectacular musical theater. Surprising and delighting audiences with as much glitz and glam the Lillian Theater stage can hold the show was a wild romp filled with song, dance and drama. People will not forget the copious amounts of red confetti dazzling like a ruby gemstone! It’s everywhere!

Honored for Excellence

CDH Theater’s staging of "Chicago" also participated in Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Education program.  The program integrates arts education into many Minnesota schools. Annually, Spotlight Education helps nearly 8,000 students in more than 100 high schools build confidence, critical thinking, empathy, sense of community and knowledge of theater. The program brings theater professionals in to see, evaluate, and educate young theater people interested in pursuing careers in the performing arts.

Our CDH production was given an Outstanding in Overall Production, Honorable Mention in Overall Performance and an Honorable Mention in an Achievement in Musical Theater rating. Because of our evaluation, we will be able to participate in The Spotlight Showcase performance.

Along with the 36 other schools selected, we will be performing a 4-minute medley of highlights from our show! Our school will perform on Monday June 13 at the State Theater in Minneapolis at 7:30pm.

Tickets available at https://hennepintheatretrust.org/spotlight-education/spotlight-showcase/

Along with the full production awards CDH Theater students were also honored with individual awards for performance, technical theater, and design work.
