Empty Bowls 2020

Planning has begun for our 18th  annual Empty Bowls. Thanks to the CDH students and staff, in partnership with many very generous soup, bread, silent auction, ceramic bowl and financial donors we are anticipating another wonderful show of support for the work of Heifer International.

Heifer International provides not food for a day, but the resources and skills that help families and communities across the earth become self-sufficient and self-sustaining. Through providing livestock, seed, microloans, water wells, education, community engagement, and so much more, Heifer ensures long-term support for those in danger of hunger, starvation, and persistent food insecurity.

Our student  Empty Bowls Leadership Team consists of: Ana Cullen '20, Will Domler '20, Olivia Kalla '20, Max Karas '20, Ellie Murphy '20, Harry Olander '20, Gabriela Blanco '21, Cherry Jordan '21, Maria Lacina '21, Charlie Lindell '21, Cecilia Shearon '21, Glenna Wethington '21, Olivia Goddard '22, Danny Honsa '22, Kashaun Pierce '22, Maddie Schearer '22, Saela Schwab '22, and Maria Zago '22.

Please add February 5, 2020 to your calendars for Empty Bowls 2020!

Habitat for Humanity

Students and staff will once again be out and about across St. Paul and Minneapolis supporting the work of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

Our work with Habitat is about providing not just a place to sleep and eat, but a home, a place to put down roots, to place to celebrate, year after year, the events of family life. Students and staff were encouraged to consider the birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and holy days, sleepovers and seasonal celebrations that they have helped a family have a place come to gather together in for years to come.

All students, age 16 and older, are invited to be part of our Habitat builds, which will be on Fridays, October 11, November 8, January 17 and April 20.

If you have any questions regarding our CDH Habitat for Humanity opportunities, please contact Peter Gleich at 651-696-3329 or PGleich@c-dh.org.

Wilder Foundation "Leap Forward For Children"

CDH students and staff have the opportunity to work with the 18-month to 5-year-old children at the Wilder Foundations Child Development Center in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood. Working under the direction and guidance of the Wilder staff, CDH students assist in helping to prepare the Child Development Center children for entry into kindergarten, as well as to learn about the families and children served. All students (grades 9 - 12) are invited to participate in our Wilder “Leap Forward For Children” days.

The upcoming Leap Forward for Children service days will be on:

September 16, October 7, November 4, December 16, January 13, February 13, March 30 and April 20.

If you have any questions regarding our Wilder Foundation “Leap Forward For Children” service opportunity, please contact Peter Gleich at PGleich@c-dh.org.

LaSallian Youth

Faith, Service, Community and Justice…..Our CDH LaSallian Youth are back at it with gathering each week to build and grow in our connection to the mission of our sponsors, the Sister of St. Joseph and the Christian Brother. The Gospel’s call to Faith, Service, Community, and Justice will be our foundation and roadmap once again this year.

Twin Cities LaSallian Youth from CDH, De LaSalle, Holy Family, Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Totino-Grace will be gathering for our 8th annual Night to Fight Homelessness on November 8 & 9 here at CDH. Students and staff from our LaSallian schools will again gather to learn more about the reality facing the 6,500 homeless young adults here in Minnesota. Prayer, speakers, activities, a simple meal and an overnight on the baseball field will be the focus of our 9 pm to 7 am experience. Wind, rain, and the occasional snow flurry made for an uncomfortable, but very impactful nights outside in the past where all were given a glimpse into the life facing each day by those without a place to call home.

If you have any questions regarding our LaSallian Youth group, or are interested in participating in our “Night to Fight Homelessness, please contact Peter Gleich at PGleich@c-dh.org.

9th Grade Retreat

The class of 2023 will gather on September 26 & 27 for a day of prayer, reflection, retreat, conversation and play at St. Peter’s Church in Mendota, just four weeks into the start of the school year.

Love and care for one another as God loves and cares for each of us will serve as the guiding theme and goal of the days of retreat. Fr. Pat Kennedy will start each of the retreat days with the celebration of the Eucharist. Ms. Katie Shead from the Counseling Department and Mr. Jerry Kline, from the Dean’s office will share through stories, the importance of taking the time to really come to know one another and to avoid rushing to judgment and make assumptions about others.

Senior and Junior Link Crew leaders will model to the class how to have fun through the icebreaker games, to break open important challenges confronting them as high school students through the small groups they lead, and offer relevant, practical advice during the post-lunch Q & A panel.

Present too will be the 9th Grade Values teachers as well as the Campus Ministry team who served as hosts for the day.

A special thank you to the staff and parishioners of St. Peter’s Church in Mendota who ear after year allow us gather for 9th, 10th and 11th grade retreats. Your kind spirit and generous hospitality is felt and appreciated by all who enter the doors of your community.

If you have any questions regarding our 9th Grade Retreat, please contact Peter Gleich at PGleich@c-dh.org or Lou Anne Tighe at LTighe@c-dh.org.
