Connor Howe '22 Recognized for Leadership
February 4, 2022
Connor Howe '22 has been a member of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps since 8th grade, and was recently recognized as Petty Officer of the Year as well as receiving Sons of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Bronze Medal.
The Corps is a program sponsored by the Navy to teach the youth about sea-related military services and operations. The program also teaches young cadets about community service, discipline and teamwork, and citizenship.
Howe learned about the Sea Cadet program from a booth at the state fair. His uncle was in the Navy, and Howe has always hoped to follow in his footsteps, so he was excited for the opportunity to participate at a young age.
The Sea Cadets drill monthly, and have additional optional activities throughout the year and over the summer. As part of the Corps, Howe attended boot camp for ten days at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois along with his fellow cadets, which is a prerequisite for further trainings. He has taken SCUBA training, Police/Master-at-Arms training, and Leadership training. He also participates in Color Guard and service projects.
After completing leadership training, Howe showed exceptional skills in leading younger cadets. He helps to ensure that they are in proper uniform, completing drills correctly, and representing the Cadets well. Due to his performance, he received the Petty Officer of the Year Award.
"It was so exciting to receive that award," he said. "To be honest, I was speechless."
Howe also participates in the JROTC program at CDH.
"We are extremely proud of Connor," said Col. (Ret.) Joe Scrocca, Senior Army Instructor.
"He's a natural leader with great initiative and drive. He's taken what he's learned in the classroom, applied it outside the classroom, and it's clear he's seeing results. He's a great representative of both JROTC and CDH!"
