Anna Hendricks’16, has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization’s highest award, for an unique project that is designed to build engagement at the Highland Friendship Club.

The pilot program, “Ask Me About,” was launched to build engagement and self esteem for Highland Friendship Club members.  This past spring eleven members of the HFC and 11 students from CDH were paired up to make laminated name tags.   In addition to the obvious “name” on the nametag, it specifically included areas of interest or things they like to do.

That extra information gives volunteers and HFC members a way to engage by asking questions about what is pictured on the name tag. Many of the members put pictures of their pets, their favorite sports team, their jobs, songs or their favorite movie. HFC members were beaming as they sang their favorite songs, told about their favorite actors or about their favorite MN Twins players. The HFC holds an annual retreat where the name tags will be made each year, allowing them to be used at future events.

“Girl Scouts has made me aware of the importance of volunteering and making connections. It was very rewarding to see how proud the Highland Friendship Club members were when telling us about themselves.”
