Justice Education Trip to Guatemala was Eye-Opening Experience
March 13, 2018
Excerpts from the Student Blog during Justice Education Trip to Guatemala
Location: San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala
Trip dates: February 26-March 2, 2018
“I’ll never forget the experiences I encountered this week in San Lucas. As a group, we learned a lot about traditional Mayan culture and what it’s like to live simply. However, what I will take home with me is not only the things we learned about Guatemala but the things I have learned about my own life. Through my interactions with the children, I learned that simply smiling and saying hello can make a person’s day. While working at each construction site, I learned how extremely important it is to practice patience in life, because sometimes things don’t always go as planned.” – Madeline Marzolf’18
“Today we had the experience of walking in the market of SLT. Here, vendors sold anything from household items to produce. There was a lot of activity going on in such a small space. At the market, we collected bags full of goods that we would eventually give to women that needed [them]. When the time finally came, each woman prayed for us and personally thanked us for helping them. It was truly an amazing experience.” – Matt Harrington’18
“We began the week as 14 individuals, some of us had history, some were bonded in friendship, while others had no connection at all. This trip would serve as an opportunity to grow through self-reflection and hard work, and culminate in these individuals coming together as a unit that would rival any family.” – Mr. Anderson
