Latin Students Visit the U!
Tim Beck, Latin Teacher
December 11, 2017
One brisk morning in early November, ten intrepid Latin students descended upon the University of Minnesota campus for a day of college classes. All ten are enrolled in upper-level Latin at Cretin-Derham Hall, where they concurrently earn four college credits from the University's Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies.
The students are studying Vergil's Aeneid—the Latin national epic—and so were intrigued by Prof. C. Nappa's lecture on a medieval monastic poem re-imagining Vergil's Dido, queen of Carthage. Students also attended an introductory lecture from Prof. M. Sellew's course on Greek and Hellenistic religion.
