Fiction
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
This sweeping and emotional multi-generational epic follows the paths of twin sisters, one living as white-passing and the other as Black. Though separated by miles, lies, and experiences, the sisters' lives are inextricably joined, as their daughters continue their story. There is a good reason this one is Goodreads' 2020 book winner!
Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
The political climate and events of the last several weeks have had many folks noting similarities to works of dystopian fiction. One novel at the forefront of the discussion is the classic from one of the masters of sci-fi, Octavia Butler. The story follows a young woman as she and a group of refugees struggle to find peace and safety in a post-apocalyptic world. This one is not for the faint of heart, but a compelling and important story nonetheless.
Non-Fiction
Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho
Unsure where to even start when it comes to understanding race and racism? Emmanuel Acho has you covered. In the compassionate and generous tone that made his video series so popular, Acho answers questions, no matter how uncomfortable or sensitive, and calls readers to not only continue the discussion but take action.

As part of the first all-Black rowing team out of the West Side of Chicago, Cooper and his teammates form a brotherhood, supporting each other as they overcome the countless obstacles before them. This amazing story will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired long after you close the book.
