Phonathon is Calling
December 8, 2020
Every year, a team of students works together to raise money for Cretin-Derham Hall. Phonathon is an important part of our fundraising strategy, and builds strong connections between our alumni and current students.
"My favorite call that I've had was with a graduate named Nicholas Paduano '59," said Briarland Brunette '22. "I spent 20 minutes talking to Mr. Paduano. He is a graduate of Cretin High School and later returned to teach at Cretin. While talking to Mr. Paduano, I found out that he was also my uncle's teacher at St. Paul Washington High School; he was my aunt's softball coach; he knew my grandfather and he followed my father's boxing career. I was truly amazed that someone I randomly called had such a connection to my family. If it wasn't for Phonathon, I wouldn't have been able to talk to Mr. Paduano and hear some memorable stories about my family."
Most Phonathon employees are ninth-graders, and this is often their first job. It's a great opportunity to build job skills in a safe and supported environment.
"Talking to alumni has given me a new perspective on how others view my school, and how I view it," said Amanda Sargent '24. "Calling and having conversations with multiple generations has given me the chance to hear stories and learn more about the generations here before us. I’ve also learned that speaking to others over the phone is great experience for a future career."
Make sure to pick up the phone when you get a call!
