Winter Trek
February 23, 2015
Over President's Day weekend, Boy Scouts from Troop 72 of Woodbury added to their monthly camping schedule with their annual high adventure four day trek into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Hours of training and a composite of many nights camping are required before these young men are offered an opportunity to test their skills and fortitude in this environment.
Many lessons including preparing water, eating to stay warm, appropriate dress and team planning are covered in order to remain comfortable while outside in some of nature's most demanding yet beautiful conditions. Each of their sleds are packed with personal gear weighing upwards of 100 pounds, and are pulled into the wilderness by the scout with a harness.
This year, the temperature dipped to -28.2 F on the first night out, but only slid to -19 F on the second, with day temperatures also remaining below zero. A significant accomplishment as everyone slept out either in a self made snow cave or a tent.
