Structure = Best Practice for Mental Health
Summer is here and many students look forward to having more free time! This means no early mornings, no class or sports responsibilities, no assignments due, etc. With no school organizing their days, lack of structure can lead to anxiety and depression. More screen time, sleep and eating, disruption and lack of routine can all lead to boredom and restlessness. This in turn can lead to risky behaviors including substance use to fill the time.
What are the benefits of structure?
Structure can help teens feel more in control thus reducing anxiety. It can provide a sense of purpose. Structure including physical activity promotes a feeling of wellbeing. Educational activities can help prevent academic decline. A structured routine can help teens maintain healthy sleep and eating habits.
Ideas for creating structure:
- Create a schedule that balances free time and structured activities.
- Do things that move your body.
- Set screen time limits.
- Establish sleep and wake times and regular meals.
- Engage in activities like summer jobs, volunteering and youth camps that promote interaction.
- Engage in educational activities.
- Tell someone about these goals
