General (Ret) Joseph L. Votel '76

Retired General, Former Commander, United States Central Command

How has your high school experience impacted your life?

Cretin High School was foundational to everything I have done in life. At Cretin I learned the value of deep and lasting relationships. Cretin encouraged me to lead a values-based life. My experience at Cretin prepared me for the world outside of high school. And, Cretin taught me the value of discipline and high standards.

What advice would you give a current CDH student?

Don't forget the three attributes that Aristotle used to describe "great-souled" people who led positive and productive lives -- prudence (prepare yourself); passion (love what you do) and patience (learn to be resilient).

What does being a graduate of Cretin mean to you?

It is one of the proudest achievements of my life.

What is your favorite memory of high school?

It was my classmates, a number of whom remain close friends to this day.

Why is it important to you to support our school?

CDH is preparing the leaders of tomorrow and I consider every donation an investment in the future of our nation.
