It was a given that Dr. Tim Scanlan ‘64 would attend Cretin - his father, Richard, had graduated in 1930 and his cousins also attended. He took advantage of the many leadership opportunities available, serving on the student council and as manager of the baseball team. His time at Cretin instilled in him strong Christian values and a passion for service.
He moved on to St. John’s University, then medical school at the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Kansas in Wichita, then specialized in addiction medicine. He was deeply committed to helping people overcome addiction, and says that seeing people successfully make it to recovery was his favorite part of his career.
While practicing, Tim spent much of his time teaching medical students, residents, and his fellow physicians. He also volunteered with the Jaycees, the Kiwanis, the Guadalupe Clinic, the American Cancer Society, and more. Tim retired from full-time practice in 2011 and moved to Hugo Minnesota. He continued to practice part-time with St. Joseph Hospital as well as volunteering with Common Hope, a nonprofit aimed at removing barriers to education for Guatemalan children. Additionally, he volunteers with the Celtic Junction Arts Center and coaches his grandson’s hockey team.
Along the way, Tim met and married Dr. Kim Scanlan, who holds a Doctorate in Organization & Management from Capella University. She spent 25 years with Boeing and then served as Parish Administrator for St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and School. She also worked as an adjunct professor at the graduate level at several universities throughout her career. Tim and Kim had two daughters, Kelly and Colleen, and now have four grandchildren.
Kim has also been an active volunteer with Common Hope since 2012, and was previously heavily involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Music Theatre of Wichita.
“Above all, Tim was known for his devoted care of patients and families suffering from alcohol and drug use disorders,” said Tim’s friend and colleague Dr. Rick Kellerman. “Both Tim and Kim are alumni of the prestigious Leadership Kansas program, a Hall of Fame recognition that both richly deserve.”
