Celebrating Black History Month with Guest Speakers, Poetry, Storytelling and Music

February 1, 2023

In honor of Black History Month, CDH held a Black History Celebration, paying tribute to African Americans' achievements and recognizing their critical role in U.S History. The celebration included poetry, storytelling, singing, and oral history of African American experiences.

Several groups of students and guests were involved in the celebration. CDH students performed spoken poetry, both originals and published. Members of the CDH choir performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," written by NAACP leader James Weldon in 1900. Members of historically black fraternities and sororities called the "Divine 9" shared their rich history and the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The "Black Storytellers Alliance" shared themed stories, including "Black Story Telling is the Breath of Life," "Wisdom of our Elders," and "Strength of our Youth."

The "Avante Garde," a music, art, and eclectic urban entertainment production company, provided musical selections for the celebration.

Crystal Flint, who played a big role in the planning, was very pleased with how they celebration was received. "So much planning went into the celebration and to finally see the students so engaged while listening to their fellow classmates, as well as the various fraternities, sororities, storytellers and performers, was a pleasure to witness."
