On December 13, the JROTC program performed their 18th annual Junior Achievement service project.  All JROTC students taught the elementary school Junior Achievement curriculum to students in Kindergarten through 5th grade at Highland Elementary, The Heights, and Hazel Park Elementary.

This unique service project gives high schoolers the opportunity to learn about teaching and interact with students they would not otherwise connect with.

"A lot of leadership is about teaching," said Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Fischer. "It's about being able to get in front of people, present information, and get results."

The elementary students have the chance to see a vision for their own future and meet teenagers they can look up to. Students impacted the lives of more than 1,400 students that day.

"The kids get to see people in uniform, see how they carry themselves, and it provides a vision for what they can become," Fischer said.

"My favorite part of the day was helping my other group mates teach because you get to spend some one-on-one time with students," said Maggie Heuermann '22. "It’s very rewarding seeing them understand and branch off of what you teach to be creative with their own ideas. This experience helps me learn how to prepare to teach someone, how to communicate with younger people around me, and helps me feel more confident with my leadership skills."
