Renowned Author William Kent Krueger Spends a morning with CDH Ninth Graders

October 26, 2022

Renowned author William Kent Krueger spoke to the Cretin-Derham Hall ninth graders this month. They are currently reading his novel, This Tender Land.

Krueger is known for his novels that are set mainly in Minnesota. He has a very successful series "The Cork O'Connor Mysteries" and his stand-alone book "Ordinary Grace" won the Edgar Award for Best Novel of 2013. This Tender Land is a big-hearted, coming of age novel set in 1932 Minnesota, telling the story of a group of orphans who travel the Mississippi on a life-changing odessey during the Great Depression.

CDH Values Teacher Jesse Cusick set up the visit and expressed how honored he and the rest of the staff and students were to have him here. “It was a privilege to be treated to a morning spent listening to the stories of the author Mr. Krueger.  As a teacher I was thankful he made the time for the students amidst a busy tour he is on promoting his new book, Fox Creek.”

The students prepared ahead of time and engaged in an interesting Q&A with the author.  Cusick received great feedback about the event. “The students found Mr. Krueger to be both entertaining and engaging and left with a high regard for our local Minnesota storyteller.  Their questions spoke to their engagement with the text, their enjoyment of the story, their curiosity with the writing process, and Mr. Krueger's inspiration for his craft.”

Krueger will soon publish his next novel which will address the "greatest generation" and their experience coming to terms with the aftermath of WWII upon their return back home.
