Celebrating Black History

February 22, 2022

Students shared achievements of Black inventors and wore clothing donated by local Black business owners.

On February 22, CDH celebrated Black History Month with an assembly. Students who participated wore sweatshirts, T-shirts, and jackets donated by local Black business owners, to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of Black Americans within the local community.

Three students talked about the African countries they or their family members are from. Alim Kamara '23 shared about the Republic of Sierra Leone, Yohannes Balema '24 presented on the Tigray region of Ethiopia, and Priscilla Oturu '23 spoke about Nigeria.

Then, the student participants recognized Black inventors, highlighting all the daily necessities - air conditioning, hairbrushes, ironing boards, and so much more - that we would not have without the ingenuity of Black people.

The group then showed a video, "The World Without Black People," which discussed the importance of diversity and how we all benefit from a more diverse society.

Finally, Rev. Dr. Ron Bell taught students about Black people in Church history. St. Mark the Apostle, one of the writers of the gospels, was from Libya. St. Cyprian and Tertullian were both Africans who made major contributions to the Church. Moving closer to the present day, he talked about Jarena Lee, the first black female pastor, and Representative John Lewis, who leaned on his faith through the civil rights movement.

"When we talk about Black history, there's a constant connection with faith," Bell said. "It's that fuel of the gospel that compels people toward freedom."

In addition to the students named above, the following Raiders participated in the assembly. Thank you!
