Class Reps Support CDH Mission

December 21, 2020

Class Representatives gathered for the program kick-off in August 2019.

Class representatives have long been a tradition among Cretin alumni. Last year, the program was expanded to include alumni from Derham Hall and Cretin-Derham Hall.

The representatives play an important role in keeping their classmates engaged with the latest news from CDH and from their classmates. Many class reps also organize class lunches, golf outings, Masses, and other gatherings when it is safe to do so.

"Several classes have started class websites or email chains," said Peggy Gartland Schafer '79, Advancement and Alumni Associate. "Many class reps get the word out about milestones in classmates lives, big birthday years, job changes, and sadly, notices of deaths among their classmates. A few classes hold annual Masses honoring their classmates. As the classes get older and farther away from their years in high school, the class rep becomes more important to their classes to keep the classes connected."

The representatives also play a major role in supporting CDH fundraising initiatives. They have been instrumental in spreading the word about GiveCDH Day and bolstering support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"So many of our Class Reps sent out emails to their class asking the class to support our special COVID-19 Give Day in the spring and also our annual GiveCDH Day in October. Many classmates sent in gifts because of the great work of the class reps. And many follow us on social media and share our posts. This really expands our outreach to our community."

Most Class Reps are proud to volunteer in this role because of the major impact their high school years had on their life.

"I'm sure that my life wouldn't have gone as well if I hadn't gone to Cretin," said Tom Troskey '63, Class Rep. "It seems like a normal progression that I would support the institution with both my time and my money."

"I am loyal to CDH because of the tradition of Catholic education in St. Paul and the values that the school still teaches," said Barb Wylie Thompson '61, Class Rep. "I have seen students and staff of the present generation who are carrying on these traditions. They are commendable and deserve our loyalty and monetary contributions."
