Boys and Girls Track and Field

By Chris Babcock, Head Coach

While the 2022 track and field season has started we are still looking for interested athletes, both boys and girls, to come out for the team. Track and Field has 18 different events to offer from sprinting 100m, to distance events up to 3200m, individual and relay races. And that is just on the track side of things. In the field, student-athletes have the opportunity to throw the shot and disc, long, triple, and high jump, as well as pole vault.

This year marks our return to the track and field at Macalester College for our practice facilities. Our team is led by experienced student-athletes like captains Andy Chestovich ’22, distance runner Allie Sowatzka ’22, mid-distance runner Julianne Mason ’22, and sprinter and jumper Josh Taylor ’22. With them are a good mix of veteran and novice student-athletes all working together to be the best they can be.

Our first outdoor meet will be on Friday, April 22 at Totino-Grace, where we will take on other LaSallian schools. If you would like to join track and field please contact coach Chris Babcock at cbabcock@c-dh.org, coach Mike Rasmussen at mrasmussen@c-dh.org, or one of the captains.

Boys Golf

By Bob Kinne ’11, Head Coach

We have had a cold and slow start to our season. We had our first day of tryouts on April 2 with a cold and windy day. Following that first day of tryouts, we had a nice team outing at top golf where everyone enjoyed the heaters and the bays. Weather permitting we will have our first match today.

Girls Golf

By Megan Fee Smith ’00, Head Coach

There are nearly 50 girls in the CDH girls golf program at three levels: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Development.

Megan Fee Smith '00 is returning as the Head Coach and Jeremy Wang is returning as an Assistant Coach. Kate Schulz and Megan Namowicz join the team as Assistant Coaches.

During the first three weeks of the season, the team practiced their drives, chips, and putts at the golf dome. The first Varsity conference match was on Monday, April 11 at Prestwick and the first JV conference match is today at River Oaks Golf Course. The Development Team will play with other conference teams at local par 3 courses during the season.

The 2022 Varsity and JV schedules are posted on the CDH Girls Golf website.

Counseling

By Joan O'Connell, College Counselor

Senior Students and Families:

  • Friday, April 29th we will be celebrating College Decision Day for the Class of 2022. Seniors can wear a college sweatshirt over the CDH uniform that day and you will be meeting with the College Counselors during Flex time to complete your required senior survey.

  •  Most colleges and universities require an enrollment deposit by May 1 to hold your spot in the class entering in the fall of 2022. This year, May 1 falls on a Sunday and some colleges have extended their deposit deadlines to accommodate. Please check your enrollment deadlines and be sure to make your deposit on time.

  • You will, most likely, have all of your admissions decisions and financial aid packages by now. Be sure to read the entire decision letter as it will contain important information about making a deposit, housing, orientation and other steps to take next. Making enrollment decisions can be difficult, so please reach out to us if you need anything … help understanding a financial aid award, deciding, etc.  Email one of us at joconnell@c-dh.org (last names A-L) or lconnelly@c-dh.org (last names M-Z).

Junior Students and Families:

  • Here are three ways to use your Naviance Account:

  1. Do the career inventories. Once you are into your account, click on the “Self Discovery” tab and complete, Personality, Strengths Explorer and Career Interest Profiler. All of these will help you to gather clues about yourself and point you to possible career paths.

  2. Don’t forget about RoadTrip Nation! These are videos of high school students interviewing people in various career fields. You can sort the videos in a variety of ways depending on your career interests. The videos are short, informative, and fun to watch. Click on the careers tab and then Roadtrip Nation.

  3. Research some colleges. Naviance has a couple of search functions where you can put in your preferences and see what schools match. Click on the Colleges tab, then Find Your Fit, then either SuperMatch or Advanced College Search.

JROTC

By Col. Joe Scrocca, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski

The Raider Brigade started off the 3rd Trimester by promoting many of the cadets who have excelled throughout the year. Congratulations to the qualifying ninth graders who were promoted to Private First Class and qualifying sophomores who were promoted to Sergeant.

In their first merit-based promotion, qualifying juniors also had to score above 85 percent on their Junior Officer Exam to be promoted to Second Lieutenant. Congratulations to our newest cadet junior officers: William Archbold, Patrick Domler, William Ek, Stephen Flashing, Timothy Flynn, Maren Gainer, Colin Hilger, Isabella Keating, Madison Kline, Samuel Laughlin, Matthew McConville, Patrick McQuillan, Brady Savard, Edward Summers, Mason Tansey, David Verdeja, Daniel Weber, Andrew Wells, and Nicholas Wood.

Juniors will be given another chance to excel and score more than 90 percent on the Junior Officer Exam retake prior to the final round of Brigade promotions for the year in Mid-April.

Congratulations as well to the cadets of the re-invigorated JROTC Orienteering Team, which participated in its first completion of the year on March 27. Cadet Nolan Keefe '23 took first place and Will Keefe '22 took fifth place on the yellow course out of 70 participants. On the White beginner course cadets Hannah Yaeger '25 took second, Cameron Kawalec '24 third, and Norah Goddard '25 fifth in their very first competition ever.

Thanks as well to all the cadets who have been volunteering their time to assist with various events recently, especially all those who volunteered their time to ensure that the return of “Taste of CDH” was a success this year. There will be a few more volunteer opportunities this year for cadets that still need to pick up some service hours.

The cadets are all looking forward to the return of the postponed JROTC Military Ball on Friday, April 22 at TST Catering and Event Hall in Saint Paul. The ball is a time-honored military tradition that builds unit cohesion, comradery, and spirit de corps in a professional setting with special guests. Cadets get a chance to dress up, have some fun, and put into practice many of the lessons they have learned on proper etiquette.

During leadership Lab the cadets have been working hard on their Drill and Ceremony as they prepare for their Best Platoon Competition ahead of the upcoming 104th Twilight Parade and Awards Ceremony, which will be held on Wednesday May 4th, at 6:00 pm on Wingerd Field

Finally, thanks to the support of the MN Air National Guard 133rd Airlift Wing, we hope to take the Flight Club on a C-130 Hercules flight in April or May, and we will take a group of cadets to Camp Wilderness to participate in JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge from 1-5 June.
