Letter from the Principal - October 2023

October 11, 2023

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy October! Autumn is my favorite season in Minnesota. I certainly enjoy the weather and the colors, but I also love this time of the school year. We have settled into our school routines and established the many connections and relationships necessary for an effective learning environment.

October also presents its challenges. Some students may begin struggling at school and home.  Issues may arise in friend groups. Some negative behavior patterns may begin to emerge.  Grades may begin to fall. And mental and chemical health issues may become apparent.  Fortunately, we have a strong network at CDH to partner with parents and guardians to support our students and implement interventions early in the school year.

This week marks the middle of the trimester and provides an opportunity for the school and parents to assess student academic progress and wellness. Parents, please take this opportunity to log into Infinite Campus, where you can see student progress. Mid-trimester grades will be posted early next week, but you can see their grades in progress at any time.

I invite you to attend in-person, drop-in conferences on Tuesday, October 17, or virtual conferences on Wednesday, October 18. You may pick up a paper copy of your student’s report card when you arrive and meet with teachers in the Field House. Wednesday conferences will be held via Zoom, and appointments are required. You will receive directions soon about that process via email.

Conferences provide an excellent opportunity to meet with teachers about students’ academic progress and teacher expectations. It is an important time to connect with the teachers and build a partnership with them. I assure you that they care about your students beyond their academic achievement. Feel free to ask teachers about your student’s social interactions, learning styles, behaviors, etc.

I encourage you to visit with your student’s counselor or dean at conferences, particularly if you have concerns or questions. They are a talented and committed group of educators who meet weekly as a student support team.  This team works closely together to provide services, support, and intervention for students. They can also provide valuable feedback to you as you navigate concerning situations with your students.

I look forward to seeing you at conferences on Tuesday.
