Letter from the Principal - September 2019

What a difference a summer makes! While most of the students and staff were away, CDH underwent a major facelift including a new HVAC system, new lighting, a new PA system, new bells, technology upgrades, fobs and cameras for security, new doors and some new restrooms. Not only do our students deserve excellent teachers and learning resources, they deserve a pleasant environment to learn.

I expected the building to look nice, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the impact the infrastructure changes have made on our school climate and culture. Frey Hall (formerly known as the B Building) was built in 1928. The new lighting, doors, ceilings, and absence of radiators have enhanced the original charm of the building. The environment is more inviting for teachers and students. Even the small change in our bell system from a loud ring to a pleasant chime is more inviting.

The other change to our school environment is our new lunch schedule. We have switched from four lunches to three. While students and staff alike still have some adjustments to make to the new mixed grade level lunches, the longer lunch and elimination of homeroom have established a calmer environment. We have also added a ten-minute break in the morning, allowing teachers and students an opportunity to slow down.

Even with all the changes, we recognize that building upgrades are not what forms a community.   Each and every student, staff member, and parent/guardian are members of this community from the moment we walk through the school doors. We offer a special welcome to the 221 new 9th graders, the 25 new Amerigo students, the 17 transfer students, and their families. Personally, I am looking forward to getting to know you and your students. Please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself when you are in the building.
