Meet Joey Rogers, a member of the Phonathon Calling Team

November 12, 2018

The Cretin-Derham Hall Phonathon is a program comprised of CDH students whose job it is to thank our supporters, talk about the events and accomplishments of the school, and discuss our on-going need. The support of our alums, parents, and friends enables the legacies of affordable excellence and community leadership to continue at Cretin-Derham Hall.

We sat down with one of our top Phonathon callers, Joey Rogers ’22, to learn more about his experiences.

Share with us your thoughts and goals when you started CDH this Fall?
I was a little nervous coming in, especially because I came from a public school with a small number of kids who also came to CDH as 9th graders. My main goal was to make friends that I like.

Now that you are finishing up your first trimester here at CDH, what advice would you give to an incoming student?
Don’t be afraid to talk to people who you don’t know, because they could end up being your best friend.

What does being a part of the Phonathon team mean to you?
It’s a good way to get out of your comfort zone and talk to people you don’t know. (It is also a great way to) raise money for the school, which is wonderful to do.

Is there a funny story or experience you could share about your job?
Yes—I was on the phone with a guy who talked for about 30 minutes straight about atoms and WWII, and it was very interesting but also funny.

How do you feel you have changed in your role as a student Phonathon caller from when you first started in October until now?
I have gotten so much better! Back in October, I would be so nervous to talk to people on the phone, but now it’s a piece of cake!

Who is your favorite teacher at CDH? Why?
Mr. Meeker is so nice and gives the class freedom to learn using our own learning style, which I love.

The CDH Phonathon team calls members of our community from October through May as part of the fundraising efforts of the Advancement Office. The goal this year is to attain pledges of $150,000. All pledges fulfilled through Phonathon count towards the Annual Fund. Phonathon team members earn an hourly wage and often compete for incentives. The top callers are rewarded in the spring by going to lunch with the president of the school.
