Peer Tutoring Program Launched

This year, CDH welcomed a new program: Peer Tutoring! Peer Tutoring is a student-run organization, with Mr. Brewer, an academic counselor at CDH, as an advisor. With this program, seniors in the National Honors Society help students with their homework, studying for tests, and reviewing conceptual ideas in their class.

This is not the first time CDH has had a peer tutoring program. There was one run by Ms. Norusis through the learning lab, however it was shut down over COVID. Now it is back: new and improved.

The idea started last April, when Mr. Brewer introduced the idea to some NHS juniors, now seniors. “Through my work in school counseling, [I] missed having a peer tutoring program as a resource to help students,” said Mr. Brewer, “That combination of our history and current need was essentially the foundation.”

Peer Tutoring gives students the chance to get a perspective that is different from a teacher’s. “Student tutors are able to empathize and offer advice, as they went through the academic process themselves,” says Emma Butler, a peer tutor. With Peer Tutoring, students can come in any time, before or after school, or during Flex Time during the day, to get help on homework, get a quick review of a lesson, or maybe just ask a question. Another use for Peer Tutoring is to allow students a chance to have more one-on-one time. Oftentimes, students can wait up to 20 minutes to get a chance to speak to a teacher, so this program allows students faster access to the help they need.
