Empty Bowls Filled With Support

February 4, 2022

After switching to a sticker sale last year due to the challenges of COVID-19, the Empty Bowls team was excited to host a meal once again. On February 2, they served up 400 bowls of donated soup and 800 pieces of bread out of 400 handmade ceramic bowls, raising nearly $4000 in support of Heifer International, a nonprofit that provides struggling families with livestock and training that will help reduce food insecurity.

Making an event like this happen requires significant advance planning and support from both students and community members.

"For a once-a-year event like Empty Bowls to happen requires lots of planning in advance," said Lolo Goddard '22, one of the student organizers. "It’s heartwarming when making calls to donors to see how many are still willing to donate soups and bread even after such a tough year for many restaurants."

Because the food and bowls are donated, the entirety of every $5 donation goes directly to Heifer International. Students not only learn about world hunger through this event, they have the opportunity to make a real impact.

"A huge part of ending world hunger and poverty is awareness," Goddard said. "Creating an event where we can limit the overconsumption we see every day, breaking it down to a simple bowl of soup, and reflecting on what we can do as individuals is extremely helpful. Furthermore, the funds we raise for Heifer International really do make a difference."

Faculty and staff enjoy the event as well, participating alongside our students.

"I loved my lunch with people I never talk to and eating some terrific chicken wild rice soup," said English teacher Sheila Malone-Povolny. "Every student was polite and helpful and cheerful and hard-working. And all of it will help people I never will meet but who need me to care about them."
