BAND

By Donna Novey, Band Director

Pep Band at the Pep Fest on April 4.The start of the third trimester involved some March Madness as the Band supported the Girls and Boys Basketball teams for section finals and into the State Tournaments. In just over two weeks, the band performed at six pep band events and then finished the season with a pep fest on April 4. The band had 22 pep band events this year for football, volleyball, wrestling, boys and girls hockey, and girls and boys basketball.

The CDH Band hosted the 4AA Large Group Contest on March 20. Other 4AA schools attending were East Ridge, Highland Park, Roseville, and Woodbury for a total of eight bands and two orchestras. Each group performed a quality program and the day provided great variety in the repertoire. The best group of the day was definitely the Woodbury 1 Band. The CDH Band was back to its winning ways, earning two ‘Superior’ and one ‘Excellent’ rating from the judges, for an overall ‘Superior’ rating. Besides performing well, the band also hosted well, taking care of many duties throughout the day such as stage crew, greeters, guides, and runners.

At the end of the contest day, several band members managed to pull off the “Parade of Champions” throughout the school for the Boys Basketball tournament.

Join us for our year-end band events.  All are free and open to the public.

COUNSELING

By Joan O'Connell, College Counselor

Attention Juniors:

College Counseling Meetings with junior students and parents are underway. If you have not scheduled your appointment with your CDH College Counselor, please contact Mrs. Reding in the Counseling Office for assistance.

The CDH Education Fair will be held Monday, April 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for junior students and their families. We will host more than 100 colleges and universities that evening. This is a convenient way to make contact with admissions representatives and get your questions answered. A list of attending colleges will be available prior to the event.  New this year…students can register at GoToCollegeFairs.com to get a barcode the colleges can scan so you won’t have to spend time filling out contact cards with each college!

The registration deadline for the June 9 ACT test is May 6. Late registration (with additional fees) will be accepted until May 18, 2018. Register online at ACTstudent.org

Dates for the Minnesota Private College Week this summer are June 25- 29, 2018. All of the private colleges in Minnesota welcome prospective students and their families to campus during this week, both in morning and afternoon sessions. Wisconsin hosts a similar event July 9-14, 2018. Call colleges or go online in advance to register for visits.

Attention Seniors:

There will be a brown bag lunch seminar during homeroom and lunch titled “How To Do College” on Monday, April 16. Two CDH parents who work in local colleges are presenting. Come get tips on how to manage your life in college. Sign up and get a pass in the counseling office.

A reminder to keep information on all your college admissions decisions and financial aid awards. The counselors will send out a Senior Survey in late April to collect this data.

Your enrollment deposit to the college of your choice is due by May 1, 2018. It is contrary to the "Statement of Principles of Good Practice" of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling for students to make multiple college enrollment deposits. CDH will send only one final transcript in June. Consult with your college counselor if you need help making your decision as the consequences of “multiple depositing” may include rescinding offers of admission.

A reminder that ALL colleges require a final transcript of your high school grades as a condition of enrollment so be sure to continue to do your best work! Major schedule changes or an obvious drop in grades your senior year can have consequences, including the loss of merit scholarships and/or your spot in the incoming class.

JROTC

by LTC Jamie Fischer, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski

Since Easter break the corps of cadets has been extremely busy preparing for our Annual Formal Inspection on April 11 by the University of Minnesota’s senior ROTC unit as well as Director of Third Brigade JROTC, headquartered at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. Our senior leadership, as well as many other cadets, have been working on presentations, preparing uniforms for inspection, and honing their skills in drill and ceremony to ensure we achieve the highest rating possible – Honor Unit with Distinction. We are proud to say that through this hard work and dedication, we once again achieved this rating, bringing us to an unprecedented 89th consecutive highest rating.

Co-curriculars continue to meet in the morning to increase participation among our busy students.

Our Armed Precision Drill is team tossing its rifles higher and higher as it prepares for the Twilight Parade on May 16. The Regulation Drill Team continues to practice their routine for the annual formal inspection.

The Rifle Team season ended in mid-March. Our final match was a grand success. We competed regionally in the JROTC Air Rifle Championships in Ohio. Our team finished very well and we look forward to continued success into next school year’s season.

The Honor Guard continues to be extremely busy. We continue assisting families at wakes and funerals; we performed duties at the St. Patrick’s Day Mass at the St. Paul Cathedral; and will assist with upcoming alumni events and the Taste of CDH on April 14.

The Color Guard is preparing for the Annual Inspection and spring parades. We will present the colors again this year on Memorial Day at Elmhurst Cemetery.

The Orienteering team begins its season on April 21. There will be three meets this year with the next two on April 28 and May 12. Come join us out there!

The Flight Club will receive a tour of the Minnesota Army National Guard flight facility and CH-47 Chinook helicopter rides on April 12. This will be a fantastic event for the cadets.

Our seniors are beginning to receive nominations from members of Congress for the academies. We should hear more shortly about our other candidates who have sought ROTC scholarships. Juniors should be taking the time to review the steps and begin their application process. If someone is considering enlisting in the military, please have them consult with us so we can make sure they have ALL the information. We are always willing to answer any questions that students or parents have about military service.

We have begun emailing the weekly lab announcements out to parents as another way to keep you informed. If you have not been receiving the emails and would like to, please provide your email address to the JROTC Department.
