The Boys Basketball team is currently 16-3 overall and ranked #3 in the state. We will be hosting the DeLaSalle Islanders on February 15 for the Christian Brothers Golden Basketball.

This will be a capacity crowd and all games will be ticketed.

J’Vonne Hadley ‘20 was named as a semi-finalist for the McDonald Award recognizing the state’s best senior.

Daniel Oturu ‘18 continues to earn accolades this season as he has been named a finalist for the John Wooden Award for the nation’s top collegiate player as well as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award for the nation’s top collegiate center. Oturu is currently leading the University of Minnesota basketball team in scoring (20.1 PPG) and rebounding with a Big 10 leading (11.2 RPG).

Girls Basketball

By Crystal Flint, Head Coach

The Girls Basketball team has shown tremendous improvement throughout the year which showed in a 49-46 win over White Bear Lake. We will host the #1 ranked DeLaSalle Islanders Saturday night in our annual trophy game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

Congratulations to Nevaeh Moeschter ‘20 on being named to the top 30 list for the 2020 Miss Basketball Minnesota award.

Boys Hockey

By Matt Funk, Head Coach

It was a wild & crazy week with a lot of sickness running through both teams, but it ended with a great result with the Varsity winning the conference with a great win against Forest Lake 7-3. Jack Nei ‘20 registered his first career hat trick, Drew Fisher ‘22 had two goals, and Jake Fisher ‘23 and Chuck Altier ‘21 scored the other goals. Matthew Gleason ‘20 continues to climb the career scoring list in the state with 217 career points. That puts Matthew in a tie for 44th in scoring for his career in MSHSL History books. Last week he passed Dylan Malmquist, Kyle Rau, and Spencer Naas, among others.

Girls Hockey

By Stella Dolan ‘20 and Cece Ziegler ‘20, Team Captains

The Girls Hockey season finished on Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Benilde St. Margaret’s in the Section 6AA Quarterfinals. We finished the season with a 12-13-1 overall record but finished third in the SEC with an 11-6-1 record. Thanks to everyone on the team for their hard work and dedication all season. We will miss you!

Dance Team

By Sarah Rosicki, Coach

The CDH Dance Team made history this weekend at their section finals at Faribault High School. Placing 4th in both kick and jazz, the CDH Dance Team went farther than ever before! Although they did not progress to state (top 3 teams go to state from the section) they are officially a threat to their top competitors in their section and conference! Special shout out to seniors Olivia Amann ‘20, Sophia Tambornino ‘20, Natalie Diekmann '20, and Winnie Do ‘20 on an incredible final season!

Wrestling

By Dan Willaert, Coach

The Wrestling team hosted the 5th Annual Sgt. Michael Carlson ‘00 Memorial Duals on Saturday, February 1st. The twelve-team field was loaded with talented squads from some of the largest high schools in Minnesota. Stillwater (ranked #3 in Minnesota and #32 in the country) successfully defended their title from last year by defeating Wayzata in the championship match. Forest Lake beat Lakeville South for third, and the only team that was new this year, Holmen, WI, defeated Apple Valley for the Tier I Consolation championship (5th place). Sartell-St. Stephen defeated CDH for the Tier II Consolation championship (9th place). The Raiders started their day with a loss to Apple Valley, but then bounced back to defeat United South Central in the consolation bracket.

The tournament is named in honor of Michael Carlson  who passed away in service to our country during Operation: Iraqi Freedom. Michael was a standout heavyweight wrestler and football player in his time at CDH. His mother, Merrilee, has attended the tournament every year and has awarded the team the championship trophy.

Boys Swimming and Diving

By Mike Steineman ‘92, Coach

On February 20-22, there will be the Section 4AA Section Championships at Stillwater Middle School. The Raiders have moved from Section 6AA where they had been for the past few years to Section 4AA with Stillwater, Mounds View, Tartan, North St. Paul, Central, Harding, White Bear Lake, & Roseville. With the exception of Central and Harding, these teams competed on January 18 in the Section 4AA True Team Meet hosted by Stillwater. The Ponies of Stillwater finished in first place with 1197 points, Mounds View was second with 983, and CDH was third with 605.5 points. Hopefully, the experience of that meet will carry over to the section meet in a few weeks!

If the swimmers finish in first or second place or make the State qualifying time at Section Finals, then they will qualify for the MSHSL Class AA State Swimming & Diving Championships on February 27-29 at the U of MN Aquatic Center. Alex Heer ‘20, Travis Teeter ’20, and Simon Baumberger ‘20 qualified in the 2019 AA State meet and hope to bring Adam Sewich '22, Luke Leonidas '22, and Issac Jeffrey '23 with them on some relays and individual events.

Please stay tuned to our Twitter account @RaidersSwimDive or follow all the action of our final few meets on the Meet Mobile app for iOS and Android devices. Go Raiders!

Counseling

By Joan O'Connell, College Counselor

Parents/Guardians of Junior Students:

If you have not already done so, please schedule a family appointment for post-high planning with your student and his or her college counselor. An email message via Naviance was sent to you with a link to your counselor’s appointment schedule on SignUpGenius. Please check your email (spam folder too) for this message from Connie Reding and be sure to schedule your appointment as soon as possible. Gather your questions and we will look forward to seeing you. Please contact Connie Reding in the counseling office if you need assistance at 651-696-3312.

The April ACT test will be given on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Register for the test online at www.act.org by February 28. We recommend that students elect to take the “optional” writing portion of the ACT at least once. CDH's School Code is 242-245.

Please mark your calendars for the CDH Education Fair on Monday, April 20 from 6:30 to 8 pm.  More than 100 colleges and universities will be here to answer your questions and distribute information. Save time by pre-registering for a barcode for our CDH fair at www.gotocollegefairs.com. With a barcode, your contact information can be scanned instead of you having to fill out individual prospect cards at each table.

JROTC

By LTC Jamie Fischer, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski

On February 7, Cretin-Derham Hall hosted the 30th Annual Upper Midwest JROTC Challenge.  Fourteen schools representing Air Force, Marine Corps, and Army JROTC programs attended with over 350 cadets. This is a competition in which schools compete in physical fitness, knowledge bowl, regulation drill, color guard presentation, and air rifle. CDH competed very well and was a gracious host.

Our air rifle team is finishing up its season through mid-March with three postal matches they will shoot in. This has been a wonderful season of having inexperienced shooters on the team learn and enhance marksmanship skills.

The honor guard continues to represent JROTC and CDH at many events. The dedicated students who give freely of their time are so appreciated by our CDH community. They continue to be available for school, alumni, and community events. They will be assisting with the Minnesota Chapter of the NFK Retired Players Silent Auction at the end of February

An exciting upcoming event is our Military Ball which will be held on February 22 at Ideal Hall in St. Paul. This is a fun event where the cadets eat a great meal and dance the night away. This is a highly-anticipated dance and we usually have 250-300 attendees.

Our color guard has been busy. We are doing varsity basketball games, wrestling matches, and some hockey games. We had a five-person team compete at UMJC. We practice on Friday mornings and often have mini-competitions with prizes awarded to the best teams.

The orienteering team will have its next training on Sunday, February 16 at Afton. We will go out again on March 28 to practice. Our three season meets will be on April 18, May 2, and May16. You do not need any experience to join our team, we will help you learn.

The Flight Club will tour Delta’s maintenance facility at MSP and visit Wings of the North soon.

Congratulations to Rhys Engelmeier '20 on his promotion to Cadet Major.

All juniors will take the Officer Exam for their trimester final. This is a great opportunity for

them to show their ability to master JROTC knowledge so they can lead our brigade as seniors. They have the study guide and we know they will do their best. Seniors who still want to be an officer can take the test, too.

Our seniors will soon receive nominations from members of Congress and our Senators for the

academies. We were able to recommend strong cadets for JROTC nominations. We should be getting word of their appointments and other military scholarships soon. Juniors who are interested in ROTC or the Academies should be going to their websites to learn more and begin their application process. They should be planning to take the ACT and attend the CDH college fair in the spring to meet with representatives from ROTC and the academies. Contact us if you have any questions.

Band

By Jeffrey P. Ruhnke, Band Director

The Concert Band just finished with the SEC Music Festival last week. We are now getting ready for our Winter Concert on Wednesday, February 19, at 7 pm in the Griep Family Gymnasium.

Immediately after that, we will be getting ready for our Band Trip to Chicago. We will be leaving on March 5 and coming back on March 8. The students will attend a Clinic at Vandercook College of Music, perform at the Field Museum, and take in the sights. They will go to the top of the Willis Tower, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, the Medieval Castle, take in a show... and a whole lot more.

Come next week and check them out. They sound great.
